The paper, when unwrapped, will reveal a simple wooden box that, when opened will reveal a bundle of ivory-colored cloth atop which sits a folded piece of paper. When the cloth is unbundled, two lightsaber hilts will be revealed: one regular-sized hilt, silver in color and sculpted to resemble flowing water; the other a plain and unadorned shoto hilt. The paper, when unfolded, will reveal a handwritten note . . . Late in the Corellian evening, footsteps heralded the arrival of Councilor Jade back in her quarters. She was carrying a package wrapped in brown paper under her left arm, and her aura bubbled with latent annoyance. She'd just come from a meeting with Will Sontir during which they'd discussed his actions since leaving the High Council and subsequently fraternizing with Ander Tagira of GALSAF shortly after the fiasco on Yavin IV. While not a pleasant conversation initially, it had ended well. This did nothing to lessen the feeling that Jade wished she had not been the one to call Sontir to account. However, there had been no one else.
She smiled, noting the large form of Z'har Desmond as he was commonly called here in the Academy sitting over near the window.
Setting the semi-cumbersome package down on her bed she quickly changed into more comfortable clothes for the night, notably an emerald green robe of a flowing material that rustled softly when she moved and tied around her waist with a wide sash."Good evening, Z'har," she greeted the male with a palpable feeling of relief. She accepted her responsibilities as a Jedi, but that made her value the times she had for personal things. However, before the day was over she had one more thing to deal with. Someone had gone to a length of trouble to send her this package.
She picked up the box she'd set down a few moments earlier and examined its exterior. Then, she ripped off the brown paper with a sense of abandon caused by simply wanting to know. Whatever it was, whether good or bad, she wanted to know immediately. The plain wood felt smooth to her fingertips, and when she found the catch, she hesitated. Her eyes fell upon her lightsaber lying next to her bed. It would fit neatly inside the box. But, who would---?
The Jedi Master closed her eyes suddenly, a thought popping into her head. A thought that she would just as soon have been without. There was only one person left who would send her a lightsaber--a token of someone to be remembered. She grimaced. Maybe it was something else entirely.
She opened the box, and gasped in pain, only vaguely aware of Z'har coming to his feet to see what the matter was. The fingers of her right hand closed around the cool metal of the lightsaber called Eirene. She could feel the skillfully etched detailing that emulated flowing water. The pain and loss that she had dealt with when Serrin left the Academy, and grief that had filled her as time passed and they realized that the Twi'Lek Jedi was missing in action--presumed dead as they'd found no trace of her, caused a burning in the back of her eyes. She blinked, flipping the switch that ignited the blade with a snap-hiss and filled the room with a quiet hum. Green eyes looked at the blade tearlessly from eyes that had never been able to cry."It's Serrin's," she finally spoke in a dry voice that sounded every bit of her actual age.

Z'har stepped closer to his love. The lightsabre in her hand was beautiful in a way that only a lightsabre could be.
-Z'har I'm sorry to hear that. Do you know who delivered it?

"A nervous padawan who was running late for lightsaber drills caught up with me in the entrance corridor long enough to almost through the box at me and disappear," she reminisced, "but I know it is from Serrin. Eirene is too clean to have passed through other hands." Jade cut power to the blade with a flick of her thumb and silence filled the room as she set the lightsaber back in its box next to its companion shoto. In the process of doing so, she spied the piece of paper upon which Serrin had written a note.Terra, Ael,
That I should have contacted you both long before now is something I know I have no right to ask your forgiveness for, and so I shall not ask it of you. It is only to relieve you of any uncertainty as to my fate that may yet linger that I contact you, and so that you can call an end to any search for me that may have been mounted that has not yet been called off. In truth, there is no longer any “Master Roma” to be found, for I have lost all right to bear that title, lost even the right to be called a Jedi. I have failed Ashla, the Order, myself, and Terra, you most of all; I am not worthy to be your Master, that is clear to me now.
I am sending my lightsabers with this message, being all too certain that I have forsaken the Code they were designed and created to symbolize and help uphold. Look for me not, the teacher, the friend you knew is no more.
May Ashla be with you both always,
Serrin She'd turned so that Z'har could read over her shoulder, but by the time she reached the end of the short missive an emerald fire had flashed into her eyes and her hand curled into a fist, angrily crumpling the note. She was so furious she couldn't even speak at first, and when she finally managed to get the words out, she sounded half-strangled."How dare she send a message like this?! After so many months with no word, when she knew, she knew we were looking. She abandoned her padawan, her academy---"

Z'har is quiet for a moment. Due to his nature it took him far less time to read the note than Jade. He was already considering how to trace the note back to a set starting point.
-Z'har Shall I start packing?

Ael didn't even notice that Z'har had spoken for a solid three minutes. The sadness and grief she had felt over Serrin's fate for the past months had turned into a seething anger that was even more potent because she really did not get that passionately involved with people anymore. There were some exceptions, but Serrin had been her family when she had none, her friend when she was alone, and she had convinced Jade to join the Corellian Academy as a favor to her. Then, when Jade had arrived, she'd gone missing within days. So, the High Councilor was something that Jedi had never seen her as: seething with fury. It wasn't until she clenched her fists and the windows of her room shattered outwards into the night that she realized just how angry and betrayed she was feeling. The crashing noise brought her back into herself and when she held up her hands, looking at them in something of surprise she was shaking. Her eyes were lit with a fire from within, a look that had terrified many in former decades.
"---what?" she finally asked in some bewilderment.

Z'har watched with some amusement as his love got annoyed at the letter. It was definitely not a Jedi like response to the situation, but Z'har had first hand experience that the Jedi way of life wasn't always the best way to do things. Then again he hadn't even managed to make it off the planet he had trained on before managing to find something to tempt him to the dark side. It had taken nearly a decade for Z'har to realize the faults inherent in both suppressing or surrendering to emotions.
-Z'har I asked if you wanted me to start packing. I assume that we are going to track Serrin down? Given what we have here, the note & box itself, I am fairly certain I will be able to narrow down a place to start the search.
The box itself was wood, a simple test would be able to pin down a particular sector or two that it was from. If the wood used was significantly rare enough, it could even limit the search to a single planet. On the other hand, the box could have been exported to the location that it was bought at & then shipped from there, so it wasn't fool-proof. On the other hand, samples taken of the ink & paper would be much more likely to limit the search equally well. If they were very lucky, the page itself would have natural contaminants that could lead straight to Serrin.

"I see," was the semi-distracted response he got as she unfolded her hands and looked at the palms, both of which had four nicely spaced marks from the edges of her nails. When she took a breath and swallowed it felt like one of her internal organs was trying to climb out her esphagus. Most unpleasant.
"Yes, yes I suppose I have to..." she barely noticed that he'd moved closer until strong arms wrapped around her and pulled her tightly against his chest. Instinctively she resisted, but soon she relaxed against him, feeling tired and sad as the wave of adrenalin died and left her feeling weak in the aftermath of the emotional intensity of the situation just moments earlier.
"What will I do when I find her? And what about Terra? When Serrin left, it devastated her---we were finally adjusting to life without Serrin Roma. I can't give her false hope." This was going to be even more complicated than she'd thought. Terra had a checkered past from what Jade had been able to make out during her Trials. What if Serrin's desertion of the Jedi was enough to turn her erstwhile padawan? Her lips compressed together in a thin line. She would tell Terra what was happening, yes, but she'd delay for just a bit. She'd tell her when they were en route. With any luck she would find Serrin first and get to the truth of what had really happened. There had to be a chance she'd come back. Right? What if she had to tell Terra---that Serrin was no longer alive?

-Z'har It would seem to me that the best way to handle it would be to not share certain details with Terra. Unless we are bringing her with us, tell her that we are going to be looking for someone. Then we just send regular updates back that that she doesn't worry about us vanishing as well. After we have found this Serrin & know more about the situation, we can further decide how much to share.
Z'har felt it was a solid plan. Barring Terra getting extremely curious about who exactly they were tracking down or tagging along with the investigation the only part they would have to be careful of would be making sure that they didn't accidental slip details into their reports. Additionally, if the search turned out well, Terra wouldn't be able to claim that it was done behind her back.

Jade shook her head, "If she and Nik are following their original agenda, they should be somewhere in the vicinity of Bakura now. I'll tell her what's going on as soon as we've established enough of a lead that we'll arrive first," she sighed, and twisted in his arms to face him. "Are you sure you want to come with me?" she asked gently, knowing that he'd not been off Mondder in ages until she'd invited him to Corellia. Truth be told, she hadn't expected him to actually accept her offer, though she'd been pleasantly surprised in this case.

-Z'har I left my little hole in the wall for the express purpose of getting back in touch with the galaxy. & of course to spend time with you. Besides, I haven't had a proper adventure in ages.
Though his tone was slightly joking, it was fairly obvious that he was being serious. As far as he was concerned, it didn't really matter where he happened to wander. He was experienced enough that it wouldn't trouble him in the least to go slumming in the bowels of a planet-city or mingle with upper class nobility. He had done both, & everything in between, enough times in the past that he could easily fit in.

Jade resisted the sudden urge to point out just how often his adventures with her could not be classified as 'proper,' and headed over to the small chest of drawers. She pulled open a couple and began choosing what to take with her. It took all of five minutes as she traveled lightly.
"Do you think we should leave now, or wait for dawn?" she asked. She was tired, true, and the resultant hormone crash after the conflicting emotions caused due to finding out that Serrin was in fact alive would probably leave her feeling vulnerable. However, the Zabrak was probably more than up to the challenge of piloting them for the first few hours.
"I don't suppose waiting a few hours will make that much of a difference overall," she mused, surveying her spartan quarters.

-Z'har You rest. I need to run a few tests first so we know which way to head. Does the Academy have an analysis lab, or will I need to make a trip to the city?
It was times like this that Z'har was truly thankful that he didn't need to sleep. With the proper lab equipment it would take about an hour to run the necessary tests, possibly a little more if the first couple tests don't narrow down the search enough. Having the equipment on hand would save some time, but Z'har doubted it would take him more than another hour or two to find a lab in the city willing to let him use the equipment for the right price, all under the table. After that the main concern would be transport & equipment.
Since he was travelling incognito, Z'har didn't have access to the vast funds & supply lines that he had built up. Instead he had about ten thousand credits, a bag full of civilian clothes, & a blaster pistol. He wasn't worried though, he had started out all those years ago with even less to his name than that.

"Of course we have one, but it's down near the classrooms." She scooped up the box and lightsabers, moving them off her bed. "Would you---" she hesitated, this wasn't anything she was used to asking, "---stay till I fall asleep?" She was tired enough it wouldn't take long, and besides, she wanted him to hold her. There are times when it's good to know that someone strong is around to take care of you if need be, though normally she was independent with an intensity that might approach 'fierce.'
The slim woman kicked off her boots, pants, tabards, and outer tunic before curling up to sleep with a crumpled note in one hand and Eirene, the lightsaber hilt carved in a similitude of flowing water, in the other.

Z'har did stay until Jade fell asleep in his arms. With surprisingly little difficulty, he untangled himself from the petite Jedi. Taking the box, the note & the lightsabre, he headed off for the lab. As the he closed the door behind him, Z'har cast one last glance at Jade.
It was nearly two hours later that Z'har returned. The first test had pinned the source of the box down to a single planet, Bimmisaari. The wood was rare enough however that it could have been bought elsewhere as a luxury item. Two additional tests later & Z'har was certain that the box had in fact come from Bimmisaari in the very recent past. Seeing that Jade was still asleep, Z'har left the box & its contents on one of the study tables in the room, along with the test results. Gathering a small pouch from his bag, Z'har left the room again.
a little over six hours later, just under eight hours since Jade ha fallen asleep, Z'har returned to the Jedi Compound & her personal quarters. It had taken a large chunk of the credits at his disposal & a few deeds that would land him a few decades in a local prison if he had been careless enough to leave evidence (he hadn't, he had made sure of it), but Z'har now had a small but durable light freighter parked at the spaceport in the city. The hold of the YV-100, newly christened "High Maintenance", was also being filled with a wide range of supplies, survival gear, tracking equipment, & other useful odds & ends. The hardest part had been getting his hands on a pair of (admittedly damaged) pilot droids so that a single person could fly the ship. Technically speaking, Z'har had got his hand on seven droids, from which he was fairly certain he could get two working droids out of. The ship should be refuelled & ready to launch in a little under an hour more, so the only thing left to do was wait.

Jade woke up shortly before Z'har returned, and when he entered the room he'd see her over near the window, twisting her long dark hair up and pinning it in place with the matching jet and gold hairsticks he'd given her back on Mondder. She turned and smiled, though in a serious fashion. Her uniform was meticulously precise, and a small bag was all her luggage.
"Ready?" she asked, holding out a hand for Eirene. The shoto she left in the box. "Judging from your return and the fact that I know you, I assume you've figured out where Serrin might have sent this from."
She pulled on her outer robe, ran her hands over the small medikit, utility pouch, and other accoutrements clipped to her belt, which at the moment held three lightsabers: her own, the burned hilt belonging to a former friend before they had joined the Sith, and finally, Eirene, Serrin's lightsaber. If she had anything to say about it, it would not be a permanent acquisition.
She didn't know as yet that he'd actually bought a ship, instead thinking they'd just take one of the Academy's ships. However, this did make matters more simple.
"Let's go," green eyes looked up at him, "no sense in waiting around when the answers are elsewhere."

Z'har nods as he collects his own carry bag.
-Z'har The box came from Bimmisaari, so we will start our search there. I managed to get us a transport & some gear. It should be ready by the time we reach the spaceport if we walk.

"Bimmisaari," Jade echoed thoughtfully. What could have taken Serrin to that planet? she wondered. Doubtless they would find out. She felt old. The idea of Serrin willingly leaving the Jedi Order? In fact, she felt betrayed. And that made her angry in turn. One way or another, she would get answers. And if they weren't ones she liked, well, she'd simply toss the dice again.
The two of them headed out towards the hangar.

When Jade did arrive back on Corellia finally she was surprised at how familiar the place felt. Given what she had been dealing with over the past months the solidity of the Jedi Academy was simultaneously reassuring and infuriating. Her quarters were too quiet at the moment. Evidently Zaryna and Selaya were causing mayhem elsewhere. She'd briefly read through the list of her escapades that Serrin had sent her upon arrival the previous evening, or to be accurate, early in the morning.
Getting dressed was automatic, but as she fastened the wide belt of a Jedi around her waist and reached for her lightsaber, she hesitated. She had always carried two lightsabers, her own, and the one formerly belonging to a dead friend. She no longer had hers. She'd given it to Non-Com. Jade picked up the burned lightsaber hilt that remained and ignited it. It might have been her imagination, but the shimmering blue blade seemed to flicker for a nanosecond before solidifying. She shut it down and clipped it to her belt before picking up the voluminous outer robe she usually wore and settling it upon her shoulders. She straightened, thinking that it felt like a mountain as it settled across her shoulders.
She barely glanced at the rest of the room before heading to the door, catching the barest glimpse of a head covered with snow-white hair whereas formerly it had been raven black. Age and sudden shock can do that to a person.
The door slid closed behind her with a quiet snick as she headed off into the Academy proper looking for Serrin and whoever else she might find, half an ear listening for the sounds of chaos that experience had told her usually accompanied Zaryna.

C3-P9, raising an arm to approximate a humanoid wave when Ael emerges from her quarters, calls out to her in its usual prissy, refined tone that is, in light of all that Ael has been through, less relentlessly and overbearingly cheerful than it might otherwise be, Master Jade! It is always such a distinct pleasure to see you. Can I be of any assista . . . trailing off as the sound of a familiar young laugh comes from a nearby hallway shortly after the sound of something splashing, Pee says, It sounds as though Miss Zaryna is . . . whatever Pee was about to say is interrupted by the chaotic sounds of murmured surprised, frightened, or perhaps mildly annoyed shouts, the pattering of feet, a feline growl, and a peal of young laughter.
Pivoting its torso to look towards a nearby stairwell, where several Jedi initiates and Padawans are running after, or perhaps away, from Zaryna, Pee opines, Perhaps we ought to investigate, and intercede if warranted? The repair and cleanup of the southern hallway is, after all, not yet complete. Nor, the silver plated protocol droid continues as it begins walking towards the stairwell in its stiff-legged gait, is the cafeteria's storeroom quite recovered, or the lovely little garden on the eastern grounds . . .

"Err, thanks," Jade paused, almost waved, and frowned instead. Then the corners of her lips twitched. She headed off the grin by pressing her lips together and moving off with the fussy protocol droid in the direction of the sounds of mayhem. Cafeteria storeroom? Garden? She was going to have to do something. Doubtless Z'har would have found his daughter's chaotic activities within a Jedi Academy quite hilarious, and she was forced to admit she did find it amusing herself, although a large part of that was related to C3-P9's reactions to Zaryna's marauding habits.
"What did she do?" Jade figured she would have been notified if anyone had been injured, but given Serrin's solicitous and somewhat overprotective bearing towards her since Z'har had passed on, she knew it was all too likely that such a notification might have been intercepted and dealt with. So she asked quietly, "Was anyone hurt?"
Stretching out in the Force she could easily tell Zaryna's mischievous aura apart from the other padawans, and Selaya had her own peculiar aura, the others were a muddle of surprise, definitely a large amount of annoyance, and the Force only knew what else. She really was going to have to put her foot down. Deep inside she reluctantly admitted that it was hard for her to be around the child. She looked so much like Z'har, and their time together had been so short. Sometimes the resentment and bitterness bubbled up inside and she knew that there were times where she had blamed Zaryna, usually inaudibly, for things that were in no way her fault. And yet, she also loved the girl.
"I suppose this is as good a time as any to express gratitude for your willingness to run damage control, Pee," though she expected that had more to do with Serrin than with the protocol droid's own desires on the subject. "It is appreciated."
