"I used to use a Valken-38. It's what I was trained on, it was accurate and sturdy. It was a very utilitarian rifle. The blaster rounds were pretty good but someone put a verpine in my hands at the range. I fell in love. I was never into slugthrowers but there is something more dangerous about the verpine. Something more final. The physical damage assures a better kill." She took another bite, chasing it with a sip of tea. Her bangs were framed across her forehead, her hair up in a ponytail, errant strands framing her face. She swirled the liquid in her mug, drank it down and looked back up to him. "Then I got Lola as a gift. She's been mine ever since."
She was waiting for him to ask about Lola. Not everyone named their rifles, surely he would be curious.

"Ok now I have to ask. Why Lola?"
Not many people named their weapons, at least soldiers. Many had attachments to specific weapons, but rarely named them, especially in special forces where they knew that most likely they would have to be abandoned or destroyed on a mission. He had never named any of his weapons.

She exhaled a large sigh, laying down her fork. She crossed her hands in her lap and smiled sadly. "A couple years ago, someone decided they were going to bait an altercation of outsiders by offering up a strange artifact for auction. The people who arrived for the auction started a riot that lead to a large scale engagement. I was stationed as a shooter during the Dark Tide siege of Lola Curich. I was able to pick off a few of their landing craft, several of the ground forces. For my tactics and ability to cut off their escape down a certain route, I was promoted and awarded the Verpine Shatter Rifle. I named her Lola after that battle."
She looked at him quietly for a moment, then smiled. Question for question was interesting enough for the time being. "How did you become father to Gaeza?"

"In the same battle. Its a long story so I won't bore you with it here. Maybe some place more private. It all boils back to that battle though, and I ended up being the only one in the position to adopt her."
In truth there was a lot more to tell than just a long story. One that even in a loud mess hall he wasnt willing to speak aloud, even in a whisper. He knew that he would have to tell Mel the whole story at some point, and probably soon. Especially if Gaeza started pushing tables across the room in sudden outbursts in front of her, or went all stiff when sensing a Force Vision or something.
"I was there. Got a transport shot out from underneath me and ended up squaring off against a Sith Lord. It didnt end well there. I spent a couple of weeks in bacta."

Her lunch finished, she bussed her plates and put them away, grabbing another cup of tea to take with her. She stopped next to the the table and gestured with him to come along with her. "You ready? Come on, I'll show you my apartment." Although there wasn't much in her apartment, there was definitely something missing from hers that was important. His daughter. They would be able to have more in depth conversation away from the mess.
The route back to her apartment was much more direct and she didn't get lost this time. The empty moving crates were sitting outside her door, ready to be sent back to the shipping department. She opened the door and entered, sure he was just behind her. The personal touches were few, only a couple pictures here and there. Older people, mandalorians definitely by their clothes and the look of the homestead in the background of the picture. She offered him a seat, sinking down into the plush sofa. There was something tight and guarded about him and she couldn't help but point it out. She reached over and took his hand in hers, her thumb stroking the back of his hand.
"Do you ever relax? You seem wound up all the time. I think you look more tense than you did on the ship."

He sat down next to her on the sofa.
"Relax? Probably not." His eyes suddenly looked old and far away, like he had seen lifetimes in his young eyes. "I don't think I have been sitting still for over four years...not since the battle with Dark Tide. Always on the move, always fighting, scheming, planning...parenting. Rebuilding, fighting some more."
He closed his eyes for a moment, opening them to look into her blue ones.
"The battle wasnt bait you know. Some Sith wanted to steal a Holocron that she could easily have simply purchased. Some Mercs found it on some world or other, claimed it made some of them go insane and the locals warned them it was cursed or some story. We had captured Lord Sinistra...and all of Dark Tide came to get her back. They didnt come to ask for her back, they came for a fight, because how dare some substandard being stand up to them. You know about the battle from there."
He licked his lips.
"Gaeza...started as a plot to infiltrate Dark Tide, or to simply replace Lord Sinistra...she is a clone. But when Dark Tide never regained its strength after having its fleets destroyed, there was no need to continue with that plan. She hadnt done anything wrong, didnt deserve to simply be snuffed out of existence. Deserved a chance at her own life. So I adopted her. I sound like a monster don't I?"

"You cloned a Sith Lord? Are you crazy?"
Mel sat back into the cushions, a little incredulous that Taung would be so reckless. If the Dark Tide would act so callously in order to get back one of their own, how would they react if they found out that Taung had cloned her? Mel looked away, thinking about the choice of tactics, but remembering back to how harshly Dark Tide had acted in the first place, she could say she wouldn't have considered his methods sound. Gaeza was nothing like a Sith, she was just a girl, one who grew up fast and liked Mandalore punk music.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't question." She turned back to him, scooching over to sit next to him, draping his arm around her. She pulled his face towards her with the light touch of a finger on his jawline. Her voice dropped down to a murmur, the tone and timbre comforting and warm.
"I think you've been carrying the weight of the world for far too long now. Am I the only person who knows this?"

"I have been accused of being slightly off kilter before. Though my methods usually result in excellent results. The price..."
He tipped his head into hers, letting her fingers guide his face with her gentle touch.
"Yes. You are the only one who knows this," he said in a breathless whisper.

She could see the price in his face, in the way he carried himself. She lifted her head and brushed her lips on his forehead, then pulled him into an embrace on top of her where she could hold him close, where he could let down his guard and just be. Not a fighter, not a father, not a businessman. Just Taung.
Just for a moment.
She rubbed her hands up and down his back, his cheek cradled against her chest, the drumming beat of her heart steady. Her breath was deep and calm and she was soft to his touch, despite the hardened muscle she carried as a career soldier. Her fingers played through his hair, massaging his scalp, letting her nailtips trace the edge of his ear lobes. She listened for his breathing to get deeper, for his body to relax under the gentle touch.
She didn't speak. She didn't need to. He needed to feel someone there, someone who didn't need him to protect her, instead, someone who would protect him.

Taung allowed her to guide him on top of her, offering no resistance but remaining somewhat stiff, his muscles not losing their tension. Then slowly over the course of many minutes his muscles slowly lose their tension as he lost himself in the beat of her heart and the slow movement of her fingers through his hair. His breathing came in deeper breaths, but slower, easier as his body became softer in her arms. All of the emotions that had built up over the hours, days, months, and years came slowly up the surface, starting with a tightening of the eyes and a tightness in his throat. Slowly the emotions moved into his breathing which became shuddering, turning slowly into silent slow, hushed sobs at all the burdens that seemed to finally break across him in waves.
It had been an untold amount of time...a lifetime it seemed, perhaps was, since he had released all the pent up emotions he had. The pain, the fear, the loss, the love, the frustrations, hopes, desires, the feelings of being alone. All of it. Some time later, he wasnt sure how long it was, he slowly came back into control...not wresting control back from his emotions but rather letting the emotions bleed out until they were gone and left him back in balance. He took a deep breath and held Mel more gently, instead of clinging, more possessively, a sign that he was back in control again, pulling his head up to give her neck a tender nuzzle.

"Are you ok?" She pressed her cheek to the top of his head, hugging him closer to her. She didn't want to move him just yet, but her leg was starting to fall asleep. The sensation of pins and needles was beginning to radiate down her hip. She pulled herself up, moving him back from her at little bit. She smoothed her thumb over his cheek, looking in his eyes with a soft smile.

"I am now. Thank you. Want me to move? I must be heavy for you."
He shifted his arms to take some of his weight, letting her shift her legs.
"And what are you carrying in there?"

She shifted her weight, letting blood flow back to her limbs, a chuckle as she thought of everything in the last couple years. She shook her head at him, her eyes falling into her lap. She hadn't been keeping huge secrets the way he had or had to juggle the priorities that came from being the most powerful man on Lianna. "Nothing so dramatic. Just doing my job, and trying to forget that this isn't Mandalore."
She reached over behind the couch to the table that held some arty looking decorations and some pictures. She picked up the biggest, a group photo of what could only be her family, judging by the resemblance. She started pointing out people in the picture, and it became obvious that she was missing from it. Perhaps she was the one taking the picture but it was unlikely that a family would pose for such a shot only to leave a member out.
"This is my brother Tireck, he's oldest. Then there's Telo, and Del. I was the youngest. Always following my brothers around, always getting into trouble with them. Tireck took over the farmstead from my father. I was supposed to marry a local boy and help feed Mandalore. Instead I joined the army. My folks support it, but Tireck always disagreed. He doesn't think I should be risking my life needlessly. He's got this weird ass chip on his shoulder that since our mom ran the home and raised the kids, that's what I should aspire to. It said it was an affront to our mother. The last time I was home, he called me a killer. Refused to let my nieces and nephews come anywhere near me. We got into a huge fight. I haven't been back. He says I'm not welcome. So Lianna is my home now. Tireck sent me this picture as an insult last year. I don't know what his problem is. My mother said he's scared. Scared that I will be killed so it is easier to push me away. I don't know if that's true. But it makes for a lonely life. Especially in my job."
She took a deep breath and put the picture back. She missed her family dearly and it was etched across her face, but with a calming, centering breath, she locked that hurt away once more and the careful army sniper facade was back in place.

Taung humphed at an amusing thought.
"I wonder if he would change his tune if you showed up at the next family gathering holding the arm of a Mand'alor."
Taung sat up but moved next to her with a deep breath. He missed his parents, though he couldnt call it a family like Mel had grown up with. He was the only child at the time when his parents occupational hazards caught up with them.
"Lonely. Well we'll just have to do something about that won't we?" He gives her a smile. "We'll keep each other company until we don't have to fight anymore and can both go...home." He slid a hand onto her thigh and gave it a gentle squeeze.

"Oh I don't know. Tireck's ego is pretty big enough where I don't think even a Manda'lor would be impressive to him." She chuckled at her brother's hubris but knew secretly that dating Taung would only reinforce her isolation from her brother. "My father would be beside himself though."
She laid her head over on his shoulder, placing her hands over his. They were warm and gentle, but firm as she grasped his hand. She looked up into his eyes, her aqua blues caring and clear. "I don't want to pine for Mandalore. Lianna is my home now. I will build my life here. Maybe I won't be lonely anymore." She nudged him a little with her elbow in the ribs, a smile cracking her face. "Besides, I met this guy and I think he might be interested in me. But I'm so bad at these things, it's hard to tell."

He grunts slightly as she elbows him in the ribs.
"Does he have dashing good looks, brown hair, hazel eyes, a near chiseled physic, an alureing quiet confidence about him...?" He grins at her playfully as he leans in closer with a playful smile. "There is a guy interested in you?"

"That sure sounds like him. But I'm not really a girly girl, so you know I never know if they like me. I think my guns scare them." She chuckled as she draped his arm around her back, putting her closer to his muscled frame. "What do you think, do you think I caught the eye of a Manda'lor? Or is he just after Lola?" She grinned and stuck her tongue out at him.

He continued smiling and leaned his face close to hers.
"I most definitely think that it the beautiful curves, strong defined shape, and no nonsense of Lola that has attracted his eye." He gives her a wink as he lets his eyes dart across her features, locking back onto her blue eyes. "But he would much rather look at the girl behind the rifle, who is even more eye catching." He leaned forwards and chased her tongue to her lips, gently brushing hers with his.

His lips on hers quickened her pulse, she was jolted by the sensation and electrified by the emotion behind it. She closed her eyes and indulged herself, savoring every bit of his kisses. She pressed herself against him, wrapped in his arms. She twisted body around to be in a more comfortable position for their amorous embrace and wound up straddling his lap, her arms around his neck. She pulled back with a genuine smile, a sense of ease in her eyes as she looked into his. "Thank Kad for undercover mission, eh?"

As she straddled him and kissed him his heart rate went through the roof, hammering against his sternum, probably to the point that one could see his chest vibrating with the rhythm. He looked over at her bed and then back at her.
"Yes, and I have your next undercover assignment. Its going to take dedication, strength, and stamina on a long exposed mission...undercover of course...it is to begin immediately. The first order of business Captain, is that I am going to have to order you out of uniform. Yub Yub." with that he grinned like a Cheshire cat.
