Ship Class: Shuttle
Ship Role: Personnel Transport
Ship Length: 20 Meters
Agility (A): 2
Defensive (D): 5
Offensive (O): 2
Speed (S): 4
Special Gear: 0
Description:
A mainstay amongst the Forgotten's Eternal Navy, the Sigma-class dropship is a technologically simple and rugged vessel, designed for rapid planetary insertions under heavy enemy fire. Engineered for ease of maintenance, reliability and survivability, its powerplant consists of a simple, yet powerful engine capable of rapidly accelerating or decelerating the heavy, bulky vessel. Described as having all the aerodynamic qualities of a brick (and with the looks to match), the Sigma-class is outfitted with heavy armor and extremely powerful shielding for its size, enabling it to withstand enemy fire for extended periods of time, as well as the aerodynamic stresses caused by its method of insertion into a planetary atmosphere.
Designed for rapid deployment, the Sigma-class breaks convention with the maneuver which gives it its classification. Instead of a gentle glide down towards the ground which avoids the heating and stresses of friction upon contact with the atmosphere, the Sigma-class tilts its nose up 85 degrees, slamming belly-first into as much air as possible, reducing its velocity from orbital to subsonic within a matter of fifteen seconds, overheating the air around it and leaving signature fiery trails across the sky that are visible from the ground below. It is a difficult and dangerous high-G maneuver, which requires well-trained and highly-skilled pilots as well as powerful inertial dampeners in order to prevent the dropship's occupants from being crushed to death under the shock of atmospheric impact. Once this rapid and violent deceleration is completed, the dropship then descends on a near vertical trajectory above its target, weaving and tumbling to the limited extent it is able to, given its lack of aerodynamic design, avoiding as much enemy fire as possible as it effectively drops like a rock from the sky, only relighting its engine once it reaches an altitude of a few hundred meters above ground.
To facilitate the rapid deployment of troops, the Sigma-class features two large sliding hatches on either side of its hull, while its low ground clearance eliminates the need for a ramp. To provide some limited ability to defend itself, as well as provide some fire support to the troops on the ground, the Sigma-class is equipped with a pair of repeating blasters mounted on independently swiveling turrets which are remotely operated by the copilot and navigator from inside the cockpit.
The Interior of the Sigma-class dropship is as simple and basic as its exterior, no considerations being given to the comfort of its up to 20 passengers as its designers opted for function over form. Simple, metal seats with built-in five point harnesses are available, with weapon racks between each seat and small equipment lockers above, allowing gear to be safely stowed during reentry. Sturdy hoops of metal recessed within cavities in the floor at regular intervals, allow the securing of small-to-mid sized crates via the use of belts and cables, if additional cargo is necessary and the dropship is also equipped with a system of deployable ziplines on both sides of its hull, allowing the deployment of troops from a hovering position above the ground up to an altitude of twenty meters, should an appropriate landing site be unavailable.
