Description:
The wedge-shaped I-3A can best be described as a crossbreed between a TIE fighter and an X-Wing, borrowing design concepts from both. While more heavily armored than a TIE fighter and being equipped with shielding, hyperdrive and a life support system which allow for deep space operations, it is not as heavily armored or as durable as an X-Wing, a necessary sacrifice to cut down on weight in order to increase agility and speed.
Described as a very difficult starfighter to pilot, the I-3A is designed to allow the pilot to deactivate the starfighter's fly-by-wire systems and take manual control over each individual maneuvering thruster, allowing the fighter to perform spectacular maneuvers in the hands of a pilot which has sufficient experience and training with its handling. Its armament consists of four rapid firing laser cannons and a single missile launcher.
A unique feature of the I-3A is its ability to detach its cockpit, which houses the life support system, a row of capacitor banks and a locator beacon as well as small ion thrusters which allow for a very limited degree of movement and acceleration. In the event of the starfighter's destruction, the detached cockpit is intended to serve as an escape pod that can maneuver itself out of the debris field and be picked up by rescuers.
