Description:
With the creation of the Nike-class Fast Frigate, the Aesir line had a quick ship that could attack with moderate damage. With it came the alternate design for a starfighter screening vessel. Yet, what the class of ship lacked was a heavier hitter. Putting their minds together, Hadur Industries took the Somnus-class Ion Attack Cruiser for a base design. Following similar patterns in weapon load-outs and a general aesthetic, The Nergal-class Assault Frigate became the true little brother to the Somnus.
Focusing its attention on heavier weapons, the engineers knew that it would carry itself more in the thick of battle than most, thus the creation of a sturdier hull and shields. While this made the ship much less maneuverable, it's Straight-line speed remained moderate enough to get in into the fray without lagging far behind its faster brethren. because of its lack of agility, the heaviest of turbolasers were fixed forward while all else was made into turrets to ensure it could hit its target with the majority of its firepower no matter its position. Coming armed with eight heavy triple-barrel turbolaser cannons, 28 dual turbolaser turrets, 40 point-defense laser turrets, and 20 quad assault concussion missile turrets, the Nergal was a relatively small capital ship with a whole lot of bite.
Considering its roll, many thoughts were placed into the final aspect of starfighters and troops. Never underestimate the value of a formidable starfighter defense, the ship came with a complement of twenty-four starfighters. However, less focus was placed in the need for troops as the ship would be meant for its heavy assaults and not boarding or ground operations, thus the team lowered its number to a mere one-hundred troops.
