The Maelstrom-class battle cruisers were heavily-armed and expensive Galactic Republic command ships in use during the time of the Clone Wars. The Maelstrom-class battle cruisers were deployed by the Galactic Republic as command ships. It was heavily armed and carried numerous combat vehicles.
It had a long and thin delta-shaped hull and double command bridges perched over the stern. Each ship cost 158 million credits. The Maelstrom was deployed during the campaign in the Cularin system. It was lost saving the system from a Separatist superweapon.
Due to its staggering cost, most of the class never saw action. Following the Declaration of a New Order, the surviving ships were mothballed or used as technology test beds. The Rebel Alliance was able to use one war-torn vessel, the Simoom.
Armed with a staggering array of weaponry, 10 Heavy Turbolaser Batteries, 10 Battleship Ion Cannon Batteries, 20 Medium Ion Cannons, 30 Proton Torpedo Launchers, 10 Quad Assault Concussion Missile Batteries, 20 Medium Tractor Beam Emitters and 10 Heavy Tractor Beam Emitters, the Maelstrom was one of the most formidable vessels of the Republic Navy during the Clone Wars. Capable of carrying up to 96 Starfighters, 36 Shuttles, 16 Landing Craft, 20-40 Gunboats, 12 Assault Craft and 4 Landing Barges, the Maelstrom also boasted an impressive 15,000 trooper capacity.
