This is an experiment. If it goes well, it will be the first in a new series of monthly writing challenges.
Challenge: Include the flora (plant life) and/or fauna (animal life) of your character's current location into your storyline in an impactful way. Create a situation where the native environment of the planet leads to events (positive or negative) that could not have happened on just any planet. You may either use either the canon flora and/or fauna of the planet, or create your own environment for locations without well-documented canon flora and fauna.
At the end of the month, the Whills will pick our favorite post(s) for special recognition, but the main purpose of this challenge is not to crown a single winner, but rather to give the community a collective challenge, inspire descriptive writing, and provide opportunity for writers to share samples of their writing.
Rules:
1) Any post made between 12:00 am PT on August 5, 2017 and 11:59 pm PT on August 31, 2017 is eligible. 2) Submissions should consist of either a link to a single post, or links to a paired post and response from two different authors. 3) As a general guideline, please keep your formal submissions to approximately 150 - 500 words/post, so that we can judge similar posts. 4) While there is no limit on the number of posts you may share here for community appreciation, only the first two submissions from each writer will be considered as formal submissions. If you want to share a post but do not want it to count for the official challenge, that is fine too. Please label your post accordingly.
Please post links on this thread for submission. Constructive feedback of links posted by other writers is strongly encouraged!

So what counts towards this? Like, would a single standalone post by one writer count? Or does the post have to be accompanied by replies from others?
For example, if someone wrote... say some Rancor training in a post, would that count for the challenge? Or would there have to be posts from some other people to accompany it for it to count?

Way to steal the idea I just had in chat, Becca. ;p

Well, someone slightly ruined the mystery, but here is my submission for the challenge. I'm actually going to use the post as the first in a running SL, but only the first post will be in the challenge. I actually had to edit it down a little to get it to fit the size range, but I always tend toward heftier posts, so I was expecting that. boards.jedivsith.com/post/104545

Either one is fine. This is our first go at this, so there's not going to be a lot of restrictions.

Standash is kind of alone on New Alderaan. I am confused does the post have to be in something between two people? if so, does anyone want to what with me there?

You can have someone reply to your post, but it isn't required for the challenge.

Not going to lie.......it's been the word count limit that has killed me for this challenge because when i start writing environment interaction, it tends to be more than 500 words. Its just so limiting for me personally, but I guess that's what makes this a challenge

I wanted something that would be easy for people to enter but that maximum may have been a miscalculation.

Most of my posts of later sit around 650-700 words. But it's okay. I can either figure something else out of simply wait for the next challenge
