Fustration began to settle upon Duvrax once again as Gavin made his display. Hands in his pockets, a bored look, it all resonated with mockery towards the Zabrak. The small window of clear thought was beginning to fog up once more thanks to the man's actions. He would learn too late that the instructor knew how to play a person in a fight, something he was making full use of in this little spar.
Growling, he pulled back his arm and jumped into a spin kick from his right leg. He expected this one attack to be avoided as Gavin was in a good position just to lean back over the high moving kick. But that was what Duvrax hoped to achieve. Jumping only high enough to spin a little before touching down, his back would have been facing away from the blonde haired man when his feet found purchase once more. Slipping down into a crouch, he used the momentum to continue the spin in order to kick the legs out from underneath Gavin.
He gave a smirk, fully confident in his own abilities. He would be the victor and his little act of quick movements and deception would be the key to a quick win.

It was so obvious that Gavin was angering the Zabrak. With each dodge, each expression from his face, it only worked to push Duvrax farther along the path of anger. He was a skilled practitioner of Dun Moch, electing to use actions to affect his opponent. Most would say that this wasn't, in fact, Dun Moch as it worked to anger his opponent instead of breaking their will. But most didn't expect anger, didn't plan for it. Gavin, on the other hand, did. While it risked explosive power, it also blinded his opponent, making him easier to read and manipulate. If things went long enough, it was very possible that the boy would explode with the Force, something Gavin would avoid.
As Duvrax made his kick, Gavin leaned back, bending his body almost in half to avoid the height of the kick. It was a clever option, using his kick to force Gavin to bend back, making it harder to avoid the lower sweep against his legs. The momentum was certainly in the Zabrak's favor, but the move was anticipated, not to mention he was more than skilled enough to overcome the combination attack. Instead of standing back straight up before avoiding the second kick, he curved ut away from Duvrax and compressed his body together, giving him the position needed to push himself into the air. His feet left the ground and moved up into the air, flipping over the sweep, his body facing the boy, hands still in his pockets.
As he touched the ground, he back and spun away before meeting Duvrax's gaze once more. He cocked his head to the side, giving him a curious stare. "What's going on? Are you needing a few moments to warm up? I understand. I need that sometimes myself."

Another growl was emitted from him, now full of anger, audible enough for all the students to hear. With each action Gavin took, Duvrax became even more infuriated. This man couldn't be that good. Nothing he did was even connecting. To make matters worse, he made it look easy. But the blinding point came when the man finally spoke. Anger echoed throughout the training area, the other students backing away, clearly able to feel what was happening within his being. The last thing they wanted was to get caught up in anything the Zabrak did. Body tensing under the emotion, Duvrax began to slowly condense his body, bending forward slightly as if trying to force everything within him out and at Gavin.
"Don't...don't you...MOCK ME!" His power began to increase as the Dark-side flooded his veins, responding to the pent-up aggression within him. He might not have known how to truly use it yet, but it was intermingling with his body and his desire, adding to his strength and speed. Jumping forward, he gained enough air to come down on the man, clasping his hands together to hammer down on Gavin's head. Landing would cause him to bend his knees slightly, giving him time to pull back his right arm before unleashing a right hook. Going with the momentum, he brought up his right foot in a side kick and kept the spin going to deliver a second kick with his left foot. Coming around to face Gavin again, he let both arms flow over to his left side and pull back against his body. Summoning his strength, he punched out at Gavin' chest with both arms.

Gavin could feel the rising power within Duvrax, an inward smirk forming. As for what drove the Sith and their power was passion and anger and here this boy was gaining the benefits of it. Only a little further could he push him before the dam would break from the floodwaters, possibly injuring the other students and himself. Yet, there was still a little more to push before that time.
Seeing the gained attributes of his rising power was immediately obvious as Duvrax came at him, jumping high enough to not only cover the distance but bring down his attack upon him. Stepping back was enough to avoid the Zabrak's first attack with ease. As the trio of attacks came afterward, all Gavin had to do was lean to his right. First was just a lean, then he shifted his body so that he'd face the attack and lean back further to avoid the first kick, furthering the spin so that he was facing downwards and able to bend his knees to avoid the last kick. It also aided him in standing up quickly enough to avoid the double strike. Enacting the Kouho Haiho technique he taught them, he stepped forward with his right foot, pivoting the toe inward and using his right leg as his point of balance as he curved around in a swift movement, ending up behind him.
Standing close to his ear, the amused tone faded, replaced with one of agitation and disappointment. "Really? This is all you can do. After all that big talk, this is the limit of your power?" He then jumped back a few feet to avoid another attack before speaking further. "Perhaps you just need a little incentive. Okay, I can help with that."
Reaching around behind him, his hand disappeared into his shirt and unclipped the lightsaber held in place on the back of his belt. It was the easiest place to hold and hide it from the prying eyes of others. It was but one of the reasons he wore the shirts he was right now as they were long enough to hide whatever rested on his waist. Despite his large arsenal, he only carried a single saber when walking the halls of the academy.
Holding it out to his side in clear view for all of them, the black chrome hilt reflected a dark light as it let the crimson accents break up its surface. After a moment, he then tossed the hilt to Duvrax. "Go ahead. Use it...if you can."

Duvrax might have adapted to the sight of Kouho Haiho, but the speed at which Gavin did it truly made it seem as if he just vanished, there one second and gone the next. He couldn't even see when Gavin made the initial step, much less the spin itself. Then came the voice, the same voice with the same tone that started this whole fight. Giving a huff, he spun as quickly as he could to his right, bringing up his elbow to bear into the man behind him.
"I'll show you limits." Yet, as he swung, Gavin had already backed away and began talking once more. Incentive? Like he needed any more of a reason to beat Gavin to the ground. Considering himself a master, he didn't even possess the power worthy of one coming out of an apprenticeship, much less a rank of their superiors. Fists tightened once again as he prepped himself for another attack.
He was held back though as Gavin reached behind him and pulled out a lightsaber hilt. An audible gasp was heard throughout the training area as all the students, Duvrax included, took a few steps back. was Gavin really about to unleash the fury of a lightsaber against him? If anything it proved him even more of a coward and weakling than he originally thought. Yet, he could only get his hands up with barely enough to catch it as Gavin threw it to him. The Zabrak looked it over before looking back to Gavin with a confused look. What was the man trying to say now? It didn't matter as Gavin beckoned for the child to come forward and make his attack, clearly wanting him to use the lethal weapon as if that would be the only chance he had to stop him. Gripping the hilt tightly with both hands, he ignited the blade, a thin crimson beam of energy emerging with a hiss. If that's what Gavin wanted, Duvrax would oblige. He'd kill the blonde-haired man and take his lightsaber as a trophy, a testament to his might.
Running towards Gavin, he swung the blade from right to left, then back again. Diagonal slashes came before bringing it straight down. He attacked hard and fast with the weapon. Without any training, he lacked form and technique, his swings wild and random. His skills in unarmed combat might have grown due to the months of training, but he had yet to understand how to use a weapon. But he was too blind at the moment, blinded by anger and pride. After his barrage, he pushed in as fast as he could, plunging the blade straight in at Gavin's abdomen. Even if he was able to evade the other attack, if he pushed into Gavin's circle and stayed with him, he wouldn't be able to escape, unable to move out of the way of his blade. This would be the end of it.

Gavin watched as the Zabrak took full hold of the saber, igniting the blade and giving it life. The thin crimson blade was decades old in its construction but functioned as if it was new. Built entirely for the purpose of attack, fitting for the current situation. Beckoning him forward, he was ready to bring the charade to an end.
When Duvrax came, it was easy to see he didn't understand how to handle the weapon and just swung it around wildly, believing he knew what to do. Giving a couple hops, he jumped back out of the way as Duvrax made the first two swings. He then elected to lean to the side as the diagonal slashes followed then sidestepped the final downward slash. And then it came, the proper opening to show just how little he was ready to take him on, to reveal to them all just how capable he could be, and as such, how capable they could be. He didn't try to avoid the final lunge as the Zabrak pushed inward, only lifting his hand to intercept the coming blade. Focusing the Force into his palm, the blade impact, the energy it held being absorbed through Tutaminis. His eyes bore into the boy's, ice blue eyes piercing into his soul as he stood there for a few seconds, not only holding back the blade with the Force, but handling the augmented strength of the youngling with relative ease.
Finally, taking a quick breath, his eyes squinted. "My turn." Without warning, Gavin pulled back his hand, using the Force to rip the weapon from his opponent's hand and sent it flying across the room. The shock alone for all that had transpired in those few seconds was all the opening he'd ever need as he unleashed his assault. Sending his right fist back in, he slammed it into Duvrax's diaphragm to knock the wind out of him. That move on its own would have been enough to drop the boy but it wouldn't have driven home the point. Bringing his left hand around, he sent a jab into the boy's side then gave two uppercuts with his right hand, the first into his gut, then into his chin. His left hand then came down, fingers extended as they jabbed down into the spot just behind his right clavicle. To finish his assault, he moved in, slipping his right leg passed the boy, then brought it back as his right hand shot into Duvrax's throat.
Sending the boy slamming into the ground, it was over. But there was a final touch he wished to add, only insulting the child further. It might have been considered brutal, but tough love sometimes was. Using the Force to increase his strength, he picked the Zabrak up by the throat easily until he hung in the air. Letting him go, his right hand dropped and his left hand came up. From his right hand, he let loose a small Force Push as his left hand released a Force Shock, sending a streak of black lightning into the boy as he was sent flying and tumbling a few feet away.
Taking a deep breath, he glanced over at the other students and motioned towards him so to check him and make sure that he was otherwise ok.

Every student was filled with surprise as Gavin stopped the lightsaber with his hands, but none more than Duvrax. In that moment, it all just seemed to slam down upon, the truth that Gavin was playing games with him. And now, that game had reached its end. There was nothing he could do as the saber was ripped from his grip. Next came the punch to his diaphragm, taking his breath. At that point, there was nothing else he could have done. Pain surged through his body as the hits connected. It took all he had not to lose consciousness when he was slammed to the ground. His mind rang from the impact, working to focus his thoughts as he felt his body lose feeling of the ground beneath him. Suddenly, there came the surge of electricity through his being as he hit the floor once more, barely hanging on.
Once more, an audible gasp ran through the training area as the students bore witness to the brutality unleashed upon Duvrax. Despite their surprise, some felt it was what he deserved. Some worried that Gavin would turn on them next. Others just wondered if the Zabrak was still ok. Upon the motion of Gavin's head, they moved over to him, checking Duvrax's condition. Krokka was the first there, turning him over and checking his pulse. After a minute, Duvrax stirred and Krokaa gave a sigh of relief, looking at Gavin with a nod.
A few moments more and Duvrax opened his eyes and turned his head to face Gavin. He was still hurting from the attacks, but spoke nonetheless, though his words came out a bit rough.
"Who are you?"

Gavin gave a quiet sigh when Duvrax stirred and Krokaa nodded that he was alright. He might have been rough with the Zabrak, but the last thing wanted was to truly hurt him, only teach him a lesson and open his mind. When he finally spoke, he felt that message was received, at least enough that what he was to tell them would be accepted.
Stepping forward, he looked at each of them. "A lesson to be learned: appearances can be deceiving. Not everyone displays and flaunts their abilities. There are those who will use what you cannot see against you. Always be aware and open-minded to that reality, less you find yourself a victim of their lies."
With that little bit out of the way, it was time to explain to them what their training had been about thus far. "I'm well aware that each of you has become irritated to some degree from the constant repetition of the lessons, the heavy amount of training, even me just simply standing around watching you. Ever since that first lesson, I've been here watching your progress before each lesson, grasping your feelings and emotions, seeking to understand each and every one of you further. But what you have been doing is serving a far greater purpose than you could ever realize." He motioned for them to take a seat before continuing. "I am no Sith, as some of you have guessed. I have wandered the galaxy for a very long time, nearly two centuries. In that time, I have served and learned from many different Force orders. Since then, I have formed my own beliefs regarding the Force and the failings of each order, even the Sith. From it, I've created a new path of training that I've taught apprentices throughout the years. The Sith'ari felt that my experiences and knowledge would be valuable in crafting a greater warrior. And that is my goal: to craft a greater breed of warrior. I intend to train you and help you reach a level that you can challenge even the Sith'ari, himself. Now bear no false hope that you' be capable of beating him, for that power he holds takes time to gain and master. But I will get you to a point that you can stand with him for a while, even make him have to take you seriously. That is the goal I have for each you. But why the basic training over and over, you ask? Because I wanted to build the foundation for the future of your training. Everyone learns the basics when they start, but rarely do they ever master them. Believe it or not, when they don't, their training suffers. The stronger your foundation, the easier it is to build and the stronger what you learn afterward can be. When pushed to their limits, those who didn't refine and master the early stages begin to falter faster than those who can truly fall back on those initial lessons. That's why you've been doing nothing but these exercises: to refine and master them. But why the heavy training for hours a day? Not only does it help to lock all that knowledge into your minds, but it increases your stamina. Those who can fight longer are typically better off. Have you all not noticed? In the beginning, going through these lessons wore you out. Now, you are able to spend four hours a day here and still go about your day relatively fine, even when pushing each other. The what about your Force training? Back to refining your control. Impressive as it is to lift heavy objects and use grander abilities, many neglects fine-tuned control. Once again, by mastering this, it'll only make going further that make easier." He then gave a smirk. "It might not have seemed like it, but I have had your best interests in mind this whole time. Speaking of which."
Reaching out with the Force, he summoned the crate he had brought from the corner and set it down before them. Opening it revealed a collection of black hilted sabers. "I felt that each of you has come far enough in your progression that it is time to move on. You have each down well in refining the basics and bringing them under your mastery. While you'll still be expected to do some training in it before each lesson, we will no longer being looking to these during our sessions. It is now time to start teaching you new Force abilities and lightsaber combat."

With the simple question asked came answers to so many more. Of course, the first words were but another lesson to learn, but one that made a lot of sense. Deception was a tool of the Sith, yet more often than not, those that followed the ways of the Dark-side opted to prize strength and power, dominance over their enemies. But this man, who claimed that he wasn't a Sith seemed to embody that understand to a degree. Amongst those who were his allies, even his own students, none knew what laid within him.
Then came the truth of his age. So hard to believe looking at him, yet somehow, they seemed to accepted it, though the revelation was met by more than a few wide eyes and gasps, especially Theranna. And through that age, he had seen and experienced so much. From that knowledge, he had chosen to impart it to them, knowing just how to give it to set the foundations for something far more than they could have imagined. To be capable of facing the Sith'ari? That seemed like a fool's game, but clearly, he thought it true. Such a high level of expectation, but one that began to settle within them. If that was his goal, if he felt they could achieve that, who were they to deny him?
And here it finally came. He had planned to take their training to the next level, was ready to give them the news before Duvrax's outburst. He had believed them to be ready, but it begged a single question. One Krokaa asked as he stood to his feet.
"Why not tell us from the begnning? Why have us go through all of this, feel these things, even risk Duvrax going off?" The question brought the attention of all the students upon the man, curious as to the answer. Even Duvrax had worked himself to his knees to hear the answer.

Realization was setting in. It could be seen in their eyes. It brought a smile to his face as he knew the lesson was being learned, the truth accepted. Then came the question, one he expected to come. He gave a shrug. "Would you have believed me if I told you then? No doubt if I just up and told you, you would have thought me foolish, sought to get out of this class before even beginning, even went to the headmaster discussing that I wasn't Sith and planned to teach you things derived from the teachings of other orders. Without this encounter, that truth would not have held the same weight as it does now. Truth through revelation. Sometimes, before the truth can be understood properly, something else must happen to set the stage. But with that out of the way, we can begin the next stages."
He motioned to the crate. "I want each of you to take two single hilts and a double-bladed hilt. We will begin learning the first form of lightsaber combat at the beginning of the week, but not only will I require you to learn how to use a single saber, but two for the Jar'Kai style and the saberstaff for double-bladed lightsaber combat. By knowing how to use each of these particular styles and how to face them, you will become far more effective on the battlefield. The more you know, the greater your chances for victory. But that is all for today. Take the rest of the day to relax as well as tomorrow. If you wish to come here and train, that is up to each of you alone. But when we resume, we hit the grindstone. Regarding everything else, I no longer want you coming in and working on each of the previous lessons individually. From now on, you will spend an hour in a full spar with your partner. Another hour will be spent continuing to further refining your control of the Force as we still have a long way to go to get you to the points I want you. Dismissed, and I will see you in a couple days."
As the students began collecting the number of hilts requested of them, Gavin looked to Duvrax. "Duvrax, I want you to stay behind. I'd like to talk to you for a bit. Once the others had finished gathering their stuff and left, he began. "Do you know why I beat you? There are only two reasons. The first, and the most obvious was my level of skill compared to yours. But that is irrelevant as it isn't something you can just overcome for a while. The second, and most important is your anger. You allowed your anger to blind you and fuel your arrogance. It's something you must get control of, less it take control of you. I know you grew up, being told of your potential and superiority in comparison to others. Those years of being told that have affected your thinking, making you feel better than everyone. That needs to die. You may have great strength and skill, but never think little of those around you, never underestimate your opponent, and always fight them seriously. No matter how it appeared, I fought you no less seriously than I would have if I fought the Sith'ari himself. It is possible for anyone to be defeated any anyone, no matter rank or skill. Remember that. He then gave the Zabrak a smile. "You do have great potential within you, Duvrax. Your power is greater than all of them, even a few combined. When all is said and done, you will be the most powerful, especially if you harness your anger, which we will eventually work on. Just remember to respect the others and know they possess their own strengths and will be valuable allies and friends. Only then will you truly become unstoppable."
Giving him a pat on the shoulder, he motioned to the door. "Now get out of here and get some rest. You've got a lot of work ahead of you."

With Gavin's explanation came understanding. Believing him then was highly unlikely, as he stated. All the more reason it proved he knew what he was doing. Moving forward they all began to gather up their new lightsabers and began to head out. As Duvrax was told to remain, there was a slight snicker from a couple, feeling that the hotheaded Zabrak would get scolded, if not punished for his actions. Krokaa showed a bit of concern and was even slow leaving, looking back with a concerned face before heading out with the others.
Duvrax watched as the others left, preparing himself to be yelled at for acting so rashly. His anger had since dissipated, leaving him with a new irritation, now at himself for being so stupid. He let his pride get the best of him and blind him to the truth standing right in front of him. It wasn't until Gavin thoroughly beat him down that it finally clicked. And as Gavin spoke, it seemed so obvious to the master about what had led him to this point. But what was surprising was the fact that he wasn't scolding the boy, but giving him the advice needed to become better. The Zabrak looked to Gavin as the words came, gaining a new respect for the one before him. There was much to learn and Gavin would teach them, he knew that now. Even more, it was clear the man believed in him and the potential within him. He would do what he could to live up to that expectation as well as respect the others around him. For the first time, his eyes had been opened. He grabbed the remaining lightsaber hilts and before leaving, gave Gavin a bow.
"Yes...master." Looking back to the man, he gave a smile and departed.

A new week dawned as fire and resolve filled the students under Gavin. Not only did they get a day and a half to just relax and rejuvenate themselves after the four and a half months of heavy training, but they also had the chance to reflect upon the words Gavin bestowed upon them. Despite what seemed to be a slow start, it all became clear with the man’s explanation. He held great confidence in his goal to make them capable of facing off with the Sith’ari for a short amount of time. That confidence stirred their own over their break, giving them greater motivation than they ever expected.
Coming into the training area, the walk they carried held one of determination as they broke up into pairs with their partners and began working on the hour long spar instructed of them. Desire and drive had increased among all of them, but there were a few whose changes were greater than others. Duvrax no longer carried the hatred and anger he once did. Now he looked forward to the day and seeing just how much farther he could take what he knew. While he did keep more focus upon using his greater strength in his attacks, he also began putting better attention into his precision strikes at vital points. Even Carvish and Cinnik worked harder than normal, finding some motivation to actually try to progress further.

gavin entered the area shortly after the students began their exercises. Immediately he could feel a difference in the air. He had hoped that his words would have been heeded, but they took to them far better than he anticipated. Moving about the training area, he watched them as they dove into their sessions. No longer would he be hiding in the shadows watching and waiting. Now he'd be present and more involved, giving advice and helping demonstrate variations of other techniques some were looking into or anything else they were having trouble with. In a single day, the relationship between student and teacher had changed for them. The sky was the limit now in all they could achieve.
The two hours passed them by almost in a flash. Standing in the center of the room, he clapped his hands and summoned them to him. "Alright everyone. gather around. It's time to begin today's lesson." He watched as they all stopped what they were doing and moved quickly to the center, eager to begin. "Alright, today I'll be teaching you the first form of lightsaber combat. However, before that, there are a few other things I want to do first. Outside of Duvrax, I'm guessing none of you have held a lightsaber, much less any other type of weapon before. So I want to establish the fundamentals. We will be using only a single hilt for the moment, so you can set aside the second hilt and saberstaves." He allowed them to set their unneeded weapons aside before rejoining him. "Now, I want you all to make five lines of three. Make sure to spread out and give each other some room to swing your blades in full arcs. Now, I want everyone to take hold of your lightsaber with both hands with your dominant hand on top. This hand is the one that makes the movements while the other creates stability and helps adjust for any special angle you need to make. Watch me as I demonstrate a kata we'll use to help you all get familiar with handling a weapon.
Removing his own training saber, he ignited the blade and took the grip he instructed them to have. Taking a deep breath, he began. Holding the blade straight out in front of him, he slashed down to his left as he stepped forward with his right, then brought the blade up to the left side of his face with the blade pointing forward. Stepping forward with his left, he slashed down to is right, then brought the saber up to mirror the position by his head. Stepping with his right foot again, he let the blade circle above his head before bringing it down in a leftward diagonal slash to the floor, then stepped out with his left as he reversed the path of the saber to slash in the same way on his right. Moving forward with his right, he slashed a straight line across from right to left, then slashed back from left to right as he stepped forward on his left foot, finishing off with another step with the right as he brought the saber down in an overhead strike, pulling the blade back as it reached his chest to plunge the saber forward. Bringing his feet together, he brought the saber back up in front of him in the same stance he started with.
Looking back at the group, he nodded. "Now let's do it together. We'll start slow and go through it a few times, speeding up each time. Ready? Begin." He began running through the kata again, turning to move back the way they came after each rep, serving as a guide for them.

Everything had become so different over the course of two days. Gavin, who typically watched their early sessions from the shadows, was actively walking around and observing them. More than a few times did he stop at a pair and watch more intently, passing along advice that could help them further. For Duvrax, he helped redefine the proper form for the precision strikes while complimenting the use of his greater size his advantage. For Prakira and Raara, he worked to help them find a better flow in their evasion, recommending to try doing stretches in their free time to further limber themselves up. Being women, they'd be more agile and flexible than themen and wished them to make the most of their attributes. At one point in watching Carvish and Cinnik performing the Kouho Hiaho technique, he stopped the whole group to demonstrate the offensive side the skill possessed.
When the two hours had passed and he called them to the center, the moved with an eager haste unlike their previous casual canter. Though Gavin elected to hold back teaching the first form of lightsaber combat, none complained, moving quickly to discard the unneeded weapons before returning. As he stated, none but Duvrax had even held a weapon and even the Zabrak had come to realize during his reflection of his fight with Gavin that he didn't understand how to properly handle and use the weapon. Once Gavin demostrated the kata he wanted them to do, they took hold of their sabers as they had been show, giving life to the multiple red blades.
Slowly, they moved through the motions, taking hold of the form necessary. It was relatively easy to pick up, letting them reach a speed that resembled full combat momentum after five minutes, to which they continued for another five like that alongside Gavin.

As they finished their last run of the kata, Gavin looked to them with a nod. "Very good. Now we'll go through that kata again, only this time with a single hand. Just as you must understand how to best hold a blade with two hands, so to must you with one. You'll find many instances in which it'll be required, be it for a particular form such as Makashi or Jar'Kai, certain moves as you'll soon learn, or even due to an injury of one of your arms or hands. The more prepared you are, the better off you'll be. We won't spend long on this, just a few passes with each hand. First, we'll start with the right hand, then after four passes, we'll switch. Ready? Start."
He moved through the kata with them, continuing to work as a guide for them. When the passes were complete, he addressed something he felt they would have noticed. If not, it was a good idea to inform them. "No doubt as we went through these motions, you all noticed how different it felt using only a single hand. Its maneuverability and range of motion increases greatly. This will help with spins and stretching out attacks. However, there will be a cost of lost strength. Keep that in mind." He then stopped, knowing he needed to emphasize something for their future training less they remain bound by the fundamentals and keep from finding themselves. "I want you all to take note now. While the fundamentals are important now, as with anything, time will allow you to establish your own style of handling. As you go, never be afraid to try new things and see how they feel to you. To make the best use of anything, not only must you know the basics, but you must shape it to you, your body, and personality. This is key."
He took a moment to look at each of them, ensure they understood what he meant. He didn't expect them to fully grasp what he was talking about, but he needed that seed planted sooner rather than later. Otherwise, it was possible they'd plateau for a short while. With a certainty that they held onto his words, he moved on to the main lesson. "With that out of the way, we can begin talking about the first form of lightsaber combat. Overall, there are seven main forms, three contemporary forms, four for alternate weapons types and counts, Telekinetic lightsaber combat, as well as a few others based on particular situations. For now, though, we look to the beginning. The first form, otherwise known as Shii-Cho, or the Way of the Sarlacc is the oldest of the forms as it was created when Jedi first transitioned from the use of metal swords to lightsabers. Initially, it came around before the rise of Dark Jedi and Sith Lords, so it wasn't built with lightsaber to lightsaber combat in mind. However, despite what others think, I see it just as capable as any form that came after. It is a simple form, lacking flashy moves or specific focus, which has probably led to such a belief in the first place, an idea it wasn't up to par, you could say. The simplicity and persistent methods of the form have also given it the name the Determination Form. In combat, it is wild and raw, fostering an emotionally-heated mindset which results in a desire to fight with lethal intent. The Jedi practice restraint and discipline, something I want all of you to do as well, though for a different reason. Jedi seek to avoid killing or even injuring if at all possible. The Sith, as you can imagine, don't share this sentiment. The reason I want you to show restraint is so that you are not driven by the emotional instinct to kill, but fight while in full control of your actions and desires."
With a brief look at the history and mindset behind the form, he moved on to the actual part that would truly be important to them: its use. Once he was certain they had processed the knowledge he had granted to them thus far, he continued. "There are target zones in which combat focuses itself around, six in total. The first zone his the head. The second is the right arm and side. Third is the left arm and side. Fourth, the back. Fifth, right leg with the left leg being sixth. The style of Shii-Cho uses deliberate tactics aimed at these points.
Now it was time to begin learning the moves and how to defend. This time, he opted to try something different and demonstrate each of these with different people and let them feel more involved. "Krokaa, step forward." He waited a moment for the brown-skinned Zabrak to join him at the front of the class. "I'm going to demonstrate the attacks and defenses of Shii Cho. Like I said, the form is simple, its attacks and blocks straightforward. The first attack we'll examine is the overhead strike. The proper form and approach has you lifting the saber just over your head so that it rests right above it and coming straight down." He demonstrated the attack a couple of times by cutting down through the air. The block for it is a parallel stance right above your head." Once the stance was shown, he turned to Korkaa. "Krokaa, we are going to go through this, switching back and forth between attack and defense. I attack once, you attack. Got it?" He went through the motions with the boy for a total of ten passes before letting him return to his place.
He then looked around for the next person to join him. "Prakira, you're up. Next, we'll address attacks from the sides. One form is a straight horizontal slash from either right or left, like so. The best defense is to turn to face the coming attack and bring your saber up, just a little higher than your waist, with arms stretched out and blade up." Once he displayed the moves, he turned to the female Zabrak who was already in a stance, ready for their part. "We'll do the same thing as with Krokaa. I'll attack you from both sides while you defend, then you attack. Ready?"
After another ten passes, he moved on to the next move and person. "Duvrax, now you." Gavin couldn't help but smirk as he watched the child walk up with a little sense of pride of being called. "Another way to attack the side is through diagonal attacks. The proper form involved have you bringing your saber around your head with saber heading down your back to the side in which you wish to attack from. From there, it is brought down at the shoulder and proceeds to the waist. The typical side block isn't as effective here. Instead, you step into the attack and bring your hilt up to your head and angle it down and back. You must step in when using this block because, unlike the regular block that can use the full strength of your arms when extended, your arms will not have the proper leverage and make the block weaker, thus the need to put your whole body into it and keep it close." Once demonstrated, he turned to Duvrax and went through the motions.
Moving on, he selected the next student. "Xar, you'll help me demonstrate attacks at the legs. Now, unless you are crouched, a horizontal slash against the legs is impractical. Instead, you'll make a diagonal strike. To defend, you'll need to stand halfway between where you would in regards to either block at your side. You then angle your blade downwards diagonally a bit to effectively stop your opponent. Keeping with his flow of motions, he demonstrated then worked with Xar to fully display what he spoke of.
"Elysta, if you would?" While rare, an opponent may get around you and make a slash at you back. If done in a horizontal slash, it is usually better to bring your saber over your head and down your back. This way, it is possible to bring your blade up and over to the front, getting your opponent back in front of you by turning to face them."
Another move demonstrated and displayed, the last of his attacks came. "And finally, Theranna. We have the lunge. It functions very much like a straight jab at the chest. However, you can't block it as you would a punch. It must be deflected with downward strokes either to the left or the right with a side step in the opposite direction you are directing your opponent to."
With all the moves laid out for them, it was time to put them together to begin working on the form. "And that's really all there is to it. There are a few other things I'll show you later. This form makes better use of wide sweeping attacks to engage multiple opponents, but we'll look at that when you all become more adept with the form. Now, break up into your pairs. This will function much like the demonstrations: a series of attacks from one person, then switch to the other. Back and forth like that for the next thirty minutes. But here's how I want you to do it. Overhead strike, right diagonal slash, left horizontal slash, right leg slash, then lunge with a left side deflection, ending with a slash at the back. Once both of you have done that once, you'll reverse it. Overhead, left diagonal, right horizontal, left leg, lunge with right deflection, back. Understood?" He watched them break up into their groups and spread out, acknowledging his instruction. "Do this starting slow, speeding up as you get the hang of it. Ready? Begin."

Just as they passed through the first run of the kata, the students began to have a greater handle on how a blade was meant to be held and utilized. But Gavin wasn't done yet. Having them run through it again with but a single hand brought even more understanding. For a few, it felt awkward while others preferred the feeling. Yet, the most interesting part was the final note he wanted to leave them with. Despite going through the kata to establish the fundamentals, even the past four months of basic unarmed training, he wanted them to master them, but eventually break away from being bound. It was there for a solid fall back to establish an unbreakable foundation. What was built after was meant to encompass themselves and be a reflection of who they were. But that was a thought for the future, as it seemed.
From there, the real lesson began. More basics to be sure, but as they had come to realize, it held purpose. And for all the simplicity this form was said to have, they would soon be capable of fighting with the weapon. Then came an interesting twist. Instead of simply showing them or having Nidana be his partner in demonstrating the attacks and blocks of Shii-Cho, he selected others to help display, with each variation shown by another one of the younglings. Krokaa was a slightly nervous, yet only at first considering he had no idea why he was being called out. From there, the students came up when summoned, Duvrax being proud to have been called up for a more personalized bit of work. Elysta was a bit shy, however, and took a moment to get her bearings before running through her part. Finally, there was Theranna, who blushed a bit at being called. She hadn't expected to be called by name and it made her heart beat a little faster.
Each of the interactions was short but helped established two points. The first was actually seeing how things were meant to go. The second, furthered by his involvement earlier, showed how Gavin was becoming more involved with the class as a whole and connecting with them, truly becoming a master in their eyes and not some distant instructor. Breaking up into their groups, they listened to the final instruction before undergoing the routine that had been assigned to them.

Gavin moved about the pairs, getting close up observations of each students as they carried in their velocities. A strange name, Gavin thought. Even when he was under the tutelage of the Jedi in his youth, it was odd. But it was what it was, a training drill or routine. Minute by minute, pass by pass, they all began to grab hold of the movements and hold to perform them as they began speeding up. But this wouldn't be all he'd having them doing today. Doing the same thing over and over in decided patterns were good for helping the knowledge sink in. Yet, for combat purposes, it was useless. They needed to feel what it meant to fight with each other as if in a real fight. Their unarmed sessions had turned to that and so now would their lightsaber training. No longer would he hold them back from that progression.
As thirty minutes came to a close, he called out to the students from where he was. "Alright, you all have done well. But its time to take it up a notch. By now, you have all gotten a good handle on the movements and form of your attacks and blocks. Now, let's start putting it to the test. With your partner, I want you to spar as you have been in your unarmed sessions. Fight each other as if it were real. Don't worry about being hurt for those of you who haven't been hit by the blade yet. What you all have are training sabers. Their power is much weaker so they won't cut off any limbs. However, they'll still hurt, so I recommend avoiding that. Ready, begin."

Not taking much time to adjust to the motions, the students moved through the drills rather quickly. Though there were some differences, it almost felt like everything they learned prior in the basics of combat was resonating in their minds and establishing a proper form and approach for this particular style. As Gavin stated, so they were understanding: the fundamentals only made one able to progress better than normal.
When time had run out, they were alerted to Gavin's call. Ceasing their actions, they turned to receive their new instructions. In the end, they were to continue what they were doing, only as a real spar, not repetitive drills. So much sooner than what he had them doing before. In fact, it was only just within that day he had turned them loose to actually spar instead of run drills, though many of them had been doing so. It made them feel as if he believed they were ready to be let go to really experience fighting with their partners and getting a real feel for the form and its use in combat. And so, they devoted their attention to the remaining time allotted to them for the session, seeking the most they could out of their spars.

Gavin watched with diligent eyes as he made his way around the students, keeping tabs on their movements for later. For at least the week, he would say nothing to them in giving advice as he wished for them to understand it with their own eyes and mind. Only then would he help them further refine the areas they were having difficulty in, which seemed to be very little by what he could tell. But by staying close to them, actually watching, they knew he was taking note of their progress. And for now, that was enough. No one could be held by the hand and guided through life. Aided from time to time, yes, but for anything, everyone needed to understand and adapt things to themselves. Perhaps if they were to become successors to him, then maybe, but it wasn't the case. Each of these would take what he gave them and shape it to themselves and become who they want to be. Of that, he was certain of.
After another thirty minutes, he brought the session to an end. "Alright, guys. That's it for today. Now, from here on, I want you guys back in here three hours before lessons begin. The first hour will be dedicated to unarmed combat. The second will be to your lightsaber training, and the third will be to Force control. Remember, if you are doing well with manipulating the rocks you have, tell me so I can break them in half, thus doubling the amount and halving the size. The goal is to turn them do dust and go from there. But that is not all I want from you all. Spend time in the library reviewing holo demonstrations of Shii-Cho and other lightsaber techniques and reading up on them as well. You guys got it? Good deal. Now get out of here." He watched them all with a small smile as they gathered up their things and departed, following after them shortly after.

Gavin made his way into the training area, mind still thinking on Mariah and the conversations they had just had. It wasn't something he could easily pass from his mind. But time continued onward. He couldn't just allow himself to suddenly stop and just think about it. It wasn't going to do him much good. She would depart from Iridonia in the morning for Sullust and whether or not she'd return was an unknown, despite the promise of a duel. To truly be in a place to really listen and hear about her life and feelings, he'd have to be around often with them growing closer as friends. That seemed unlikely. So all he could do was press on with life.
Setting his bag to the side, he stepped into the center of the training area. He needed to clear his mind and redirect his focus before he could truly begin. Taking in a deep breath and closed his eyes, he worked to silence his mind and cast all other thoughts away. But as he did, he caught the sound of something. It grabbed hold of his attention and he redirected his focus. As he blocked out all else, it was th sound of waves crashing ashore that resonated within his ears.
*Opening his eyes, he was met with a sight he had long since seen. A white sandy beach with crystal clear blue waters shoving their way to shore. It was his home, the Wastelands of Naza. Memories came flooding back: nights spent on its shore and the deep dive into the depths to retrieve a pearl to prove himself worthy of marrying a woman he loved. As if on cue to his thoughts, he felt arms slip around him from behind. A body pressed against his back as he heard the soft melodic tones of a woman's voice. "It's been a long time since you've been home. Thought it would be good to show them to you again."
Letting his head drop with a small smile, he let his hands rest upon those that wrapped around his middle for a moment before finally turning to face the woman behind him. Brilliantly shining emerald eyes stared back at him that was only enhanced by a warm, loving smile. "I can't even remember the last time I thought about these shores. Though that doesn't mean I haven't stopped thinking about you, Jade." He let his hand move up to her cheek to caress it. He couldn't deny how much he wished to hold her as he once did. No amount of time and control could change that feeling. "I've missed you so much."
Jade let her head settle into his to his hand just like she always did before looking back to him. "I know. I have too, but you can't keep thinking on the past. I know you feel you've let go of the past and I believe you have. But I wonder, are you really?"
Gavin gave a small chuckle as it all clicked with him. "I should have guessed. I knew that voice seemed familiar. You were telling me to push Mariah, wanting me to make her give in and speak about herself, wasn't it?"
Jade gave a small shrug with a smile. "She may not have realized, just as much as you didn't, but she looked like she needed it. It was clear that she was carrying a weight on her shoulders and I know that talking to you would do her some good. Just as much as it'd do you some good."
Gavin looked at her, raising an eyebrow. Do him some good? What good would everything that happened do for him? "What do you mean? What good do I need? Has my life recently not been better than what I accepted?"
Jade laughed as she raised a hand to his cheek. "So perceptive about everyone except yourself. You have moved on from your past, yes. You have begun looking for a home and reconnected with an old desire in teaching. But you haven't been able to fully move on. This is because while you've accepted what has happened in your past and are ready to move on, you have not opened yourself up to be able to do that. I agree with Vannihr and Coretha. You need to find someone. Maybe you can find it with her, maybe it'll be someone else, I don't know. But you need to be looking and open to these encounters." She gave a sigh before letting herself settle into his chest. "Whatever Mariah proves to be for you, I feel you should stay close to her, As you've made clear, you two are so similar. Not only can you connect with her, but she can open up your mind and help you see. Couldn't you tell? Just as your words stirred within her, so, too, did hers in you. Find a way to keep in touch with her. Promise me you'll open up and try to move forward?" She then looked up with eyes of hope.
Gavin let his arms wrap around her as she let herself rest in his arms. Her words resonated within his mind. She was right. As much as he didn't realize or even want to accept himself, Mariah had stirred him up in a way he hadn't been in a long time. The crimson-haired woman had made him stop more than once and think about his answers. And the fact that he so willingly opened up to her when no one else in the academy knew the slightest thing about him? She certainly was a woman of a rare breed. That much couldn't be denied. And then came the request, one he couldn't deny her. Looking back to her, he gave a nod. "I will try. Anything for you, my love."
Giving him a smile, all she gave in response was a kiss before fading away, the sounds of crashing waves following slowly afterward.*
Opening his eyes, he looked around to see the training area around him once more. Taking a deep breath, he looked back towards the entrance, reflecting upon the woman currently taking residence in his chambers. He wouldn't deny there being something about her that caught his attention. Though he was reluctant to think further on it, knowing their paths may never cross again, it was a request from his wife to keep in touch and let something form between them in some capacity. If that was what Jade wanted, he would honor it. If there was anyone who'd never lead him astray, it was her. But he soon let the thought pass, knowing there wasn't much else to do for now. All he could do was continue with his nightly training before heading off to the courtyard to sleep for the night.
