What is the Traffic Light System?
The Traffic Light System (TLS) is a way of signaling an individual's openness to RP and preferences for types of RP.
TLS works by providing a number of colours from which an RPer can choose, each colour signifying a different level of involvement. It is intended to be used by RPers who are currently in story lines they do not wish interrupted; by RPers who have a preference for one variety of RP over another; RPers who wish to make known their openness to any and all forms of RP; and even RPers who will be unavailable for a period of time to make known their absence and estimated date of return.
The colours, and what they indicate:
These colours have been chosen to cover as many as possible of the potential RP situations.
What does the TLS look like?
The TLS consists of two profile fields. One will be a drop-down menu with the aforementioned options; the other will be a text field, where additional relevant information may go. For instance, if one were to choose Yellow from the menu, indicating a preference for only certain types of RP, then the text field would be used to describe what forms of RP one is willing to partake in. If one chose black/violet, the text field would be used to note when one plans to return, and who is taking care of one's IC assets (such as defending one's planet) in one's absence.
Do I have to use the TLS?
This system is not mandatory. We do require, however, that even if you personally do not use it, you still respect those who will use it. It is not truly anything new at all. We have said from the beginning of this site that it takes mutual agreement to RP enjoyably. It takes respect for each other's wishes in regards to what RP they are willing to participate in. TLS is, quite simply, nothing more than a way of making those preference known more easily.
In this current guise it is not perfect; many RPers, as we know, maintain multiple characters even from a single account, or keep multiple story lines going on at the same time, and TLS as a profile field does not allow for more than one light per account.

The colours, and what they indicate:
- RED: There is a planned SL currently involving my character that should not be disrupted by anything. I am prepared to explain this SL to those interested, but I am not interested in bringing any new elements or RPers into it.
- ORANGE: There is a planned SL currently involving my character, but it is not set in stone and may be modified or joined. I am prepared to explain the SL to those interested, and may give permission to join or provide ideas.
- YELLOW: I am in general RP but am looking for only certain types of RP. I am prepared to explain to those interested what kinds of RP I am interested in, and ask that I be left out of RP types in which I do not wish to partake.
- GREEN: I am open to any type of RP, but would prefer that this RP not result in adverse consequences such as death for my character. I am prepared to explain to those interested how far I am willing to go in terms of what happens to my character.
- BLUE: I am open to any RP, even that which could lead to death or other adverse consequences for my character.
- PURPLE: I am not able to RP but will be back soon. I should be back by ____. Alternatively, I am only able to RP on certain occasions, and have listed below what those occasions are.
