Whiskey & Philosophy- Principal Authors: Eralam & Sinistra
- Who can post on this thread: Eralam & Sinistra
- I want to receive critical responses: N
- I will be using standard Universe rules here (e.g., canon-only, fleet limits, etc.): N
Location: The Eralam's Explosive Emporium Timeframe: After his meeting The disguise was cast off, the rusty skinned Togruta was put away, replaced by the short, older woman back in her black tunic and slacks. The sheen on her boots was dull, they needed a good polish but it was not the sort of thing she would really care about. These clothes were what she wore when she was addressing those who called the Estate of the Ten home. If she needed to look the part of the politician, she had enough finery to outfit half the aristocracy of Kuat. Her hair was pulled up and twisted around in a messy bun, secured with a stylus she nicked from his counter somewhere. The errant strands of chocolate and silver tried in vain to escape the confinement but she did not seem too worried about her appearance at the moment.
She sat on a deep plush chair in his private quarters, a bottle of his finest in one hand and a pair of highball glasses in the other. She poured them each half a glass, leaving his on the small end table between the chairs. She sank back into the embrace of the cushions, her glass in her right hand resting on the arm of the furniture.
The warm buzz of her previous glasses had started to fade between the elevator rides and the meeting. She cringed at the participants; it looked like a collection of serial killers and lone wolves. People who definitely don't work well together. She didn't mind them, it would be interesting to see if they could pull it off. She raised the glass to her lips and tasted the exquisite blend once more.
Bogan's beard this stuff was good. She closed her eyes to savor the burn while she waited for him to join her. She was struck by the strange mix of his decorating style. There were certainly many things strewn around that were indicative of his former incantation, the robotic form that encased his Shard. However, there were things that were catered more to organics and she wondered if it was to welcome guests or to comfort his new human form.
She called out to him, her voice husky from the punch of the whiskey, her nose slightly congested thanks to her aging body's reaction to the alcohol."You coming? I poured you one, but I'll drink it all alone."

"Yeah, hang on a minute."
Immediately after the meeting, Dresden had headed right for the shower. Travel always had a way of leaving one with a certain funk, and the sanisteams aboard most ships never really seemed to do the trick. Add that in with the stress of dealing with Riplian in confined quarters and in obvious pain for three days, and one might understand why he needed to relax a bit.
He came out of the bathroom still slightly damp, wearing some comfortable-looking white board shorts and an old black T-shirt that had long ago faded to grey, the slogan rendered illegible by time. He noticed the attention his guest gave to the interior, but remained silent until after he had plopped down on the couch, leaving a respectful distance in between the two, and picked up his own glass.
"Koko did the interior design. That woman is a wizard, I swear. No matter how much work I give her, it gets done quickly, and then she complains about being underutilized."

She could not get over his new human form. It was as if he had always had this body laying around somewhere, as his clothing seemed well worm and faded with age and use. How long had it actually been since his Shard had been killed? Perhaps he owned no other teeshirts. She looked around at the decor again, taking in the touches of Koko around the rooms. Her tongue caught between her teeth as she grinned devilishly, her face took on a mischievously sinister expression.
"I don't think Koko liked Vera. I know the Major didn't. But then again, I enjoy pushing the buttons of psychos. They're easy to read."
An eruption of giggles was only silenced by the pause required to take another sip of the beverage in her hand. She studied everything about him now. The way he held his glass, the way he sat on the couch, the way he carried himself and how emotions seemed to affect him. She was curious if any of his previous views had changed now that he could experience the full spectrum of humanity. Now that he had true mortality. But first, she wanted to ask him about something a little more personal.
"So the Major. What's the story there? And don't tell me there isn't one. The body language alone between you two gave it away."

Dresden sighed and took another drink.
"She'd argue that she's perfectly sane, but then again, she'd likely do that arguing with herself."
The whiskey by this point was starting to warm his innards and soften the edges on the solid block of stress that had built up the last few days.
"I don't know that 'story' quite covers it. She set a trap, using herself as bait. It worked brilliantly, but that left her stuck between Diva and me. Should have killed her, but she has a fine tactical mind, and she's one of the most talented illusionists I've ever met. Gave her a second chance. On her way to meet up with me the next morning, she got ambushed. She took out something on the order of 15-20 troops with nothing but that damned musket of hers, but there were too many for one human, and I had to pull her ass out of the fire. And spend the last few days nursing her back to health, because she had to get shot up in the process."
While he was talking, the fallen Whill studied his guest every bit as intently as she had studied him. She was a little older, a little more careworn than when last they had met, but not in a bad way. Most humans seemed to fall apart after a certain point, but Sin went the other way. A few lines and a bit of grey suited her well, and lent a certain character to features that were already quite attractive by human standards. Much to his surprise, he found he thought the robes suited her far better than the bodysuit from earlier, even if they weren't quite as revealing.
"Once or twice we've had what you might call a moment, if one were inclined to use euphemisms, but they were always fleeting at best. Honestly, I thought she hated my guts until her reaction to seeing you."

"Ah, well that's women for you. You want to know how one feels about you, bring another woman around." She took another sip, her eyes growing distant as she got introspective. The past flashed in her eyes and she was moved to describe the scene playing out in her mind. "I acted out like that at Kaskyyyk Academy once, ended up tearing the place apart because I didn't like the gal my brother was seeing. Bogan's beard, it was a mess. God I hated her. She wasn't so bad, but I was used to being the queen of the academy. I worked so hard to win every battle on the same terms as all the guys. I earned my place, but she came in and batted her eyelashes and flirted and they were about to hand the keys to the palace to her. I was so angry about it, I betrayed my brother to the Iron Fists. Hell hath no fury, right?"
She regretted the experience, it showed clearly on her face in the sour twist of her lips and the furrowed brows. It had been more than 20 years but Sith do not forgive and move on so easily. Scars never heal with them, thy pick their wounds, let them fester, and let them ooze. It served their purposes, self-flagellation of the spirit to remind them that the pain they felt only strengthened their resolve. After all, if they were happy and well adjusted, they wouldn't be Sith. She pulled her focus back to the here and now, taking another sip of the potent amber liquid.
"Moments, huh? Those pesky human emotions getting the better of you? I didn't figure you to be capable of such things but I guess that was before the blue fairy turned you into a real boy. Do these emotions and thoughts vex you?"

He let loose a bark of harsh laughter.
"HA! Vex. That's putting it mildly."
Dresden paused for a moment, staring into the rich amber whiskey at the bottom of the glass.
"It's not impossible for a Shard to feel emotion. Look at Koko, for instance. She embraced it so wholly that most don't even know she's a Shard without being told."
He killed off the rest of his glass and poured another. Ordinarily, he wouldn't waste more than a glass or two of this particular brand; they had gone out of business years ago and he had yet to find a suitable replacement. But hell, he only had a year left, and it wasn't like he got to enjoy company like this every day. No reason not to make the most of it.
"I've always tried to isolate myself from it, even when using my HRD chassis. The consequences of an undying vengeful Whill always seemed to be too great a risk. And now that I don't have any choice in the matter, well, it's hard."
The former Shard seemed to be at a loss for a moment. The thousand yard stare that all combat veterans seemed to adopt after a while was out in full force. His eyes were seeing, but his mind was a million miles away.
"I'm having to deal with all sorts if new things, and she's one of them."

"I gather. If it makes you feel better, I've been dealing with emotions and impulses my whole life. Sometimes it is easy to ignore the nagging sensation of morality and humanity. Sometimes it threatens to consume you and leave nothing in its wake. It's juggling fire batons wearing a suit soaked with petrol. You will get burned, it's just a matter of scorching your hand or burning yourself alive. The other part is knowing how and when to let things affect you. At least in my line of work." She set the glass down and shimmied the outer tunic off, draping it over the arm of the couch with her belt. She felt like getting comfortable and if he was wearing a tee and board shorts, she could let her skin breathe a bit. She wore a black tanktop under her robes, her arms covered in thick black lines of ink. They looked like strange runes that were definitely old as they had faded from the bright black they once were. What skin of her back could be seen was striped as though she were a white tiger. Her skin never saw the light of day and so the revelation was sure to bring the observation that she was alarmingly pale. She reached for the drink again and topped hers off before she leaned back into the couch with a inquisitive look in her eye."So how do you feel about the Major? And Koko? Now that your body betrays you with chemistry and pheromones?"

Well that was interesting. The tattoos had been a bit unexpected, but the again, she was a Sith. Still, the effect wasn't unpleasant. At least she didn't go for red and black. That old cliché was far more annoying now that he had fucks to give about aesthetics.
"Koko is like a daughter to me. I rescued her crystal from a lab, where they were experimenting on Shard and Tsil crystals. Whatever personality had been in her crystal was gone; she was a blank slate. I commissioned a special HRD, more of a biot, really, that would start at infancy and grow to adulthood, at which point it would stop aging. That was the only way to give her a chance at having some sort of personality. So in a very real sense, she is my daughter. I raised her. As for the Major..."
The last bit of liquor in the glass was tossed down, and was quickly followed by a healthy slug from the same glass after a refill.
"She's fascinating, beautiful in her own peculiar way, and I can't help but be drawn to her. But I'm not going to beat my head against the wall, waiting for something that will never happen. I'll be patient with her, try to be her friend, or at the very least someone who won't stab her in the back at the first opportunity. And if she ever thaws, cool. We'll take it from there, but I'm not holding my breath."
There was a slightly haunted look in Dresden's eye as he stopped drilling holes in the bottom of his glass and met Sinistra's gaze.
"Not this close to the end."

"Ah, therein lies the rub. We are living on borrowed time. You have the luxury and the horror of knowing the exact date of your demise. I could be killed tomorrow or I could live to be old and senile, toothless in a bed. Most likely, I will be cut down by a foe or a potential usurper. Either way, the onus to initiate contact and intimacy is on me. The time I have left to spend with the man I love is fleeting. I would wage a thousand wars for the chance to extend that time with him. I would burn the galaxy as an eternal flame to his name. I would build him an everlasting tribute in an empire that proclaimed his glory to the stars forevermore."
She noticed the look on his face, dropping her eyes to the glass in her hand. She felt vulnerable and exposed. She never spoke of love to anyone. Well anyone except the one she spoke of. She drained the glass and sat forward reaching for the bottle to refresh her drink. The heavy buzz from the whiskey was affecting her normally guarded nature and she realized that the filters she carried to censor her thoughts were falling one at a time.
"Don't look at me like that. I am capable of love." She sat back with a heavy sigh, the glass held in both hands, set in her lap.

The former Shard smiled warmly.
"I never doubted either your ability or your aptitude. I just found it odd that you would indulge in such a thing, given the inherent risks to one in your position."
There was just a hint if sadness in his voice. Dresden knew what it must have cost her to even admit that out loud. If any of her "colleagues" ever found out, her lover would be a marked man. He didn't have many friends, in this world or any other, but he valued the ones he had. He made a mental note to make sure that if that day ever came, they would have a safe place to escape to, and that anyone wishing to harm them would pay with their lives, but only after weeks in agony.
"I'm sure your lover is a remarkable being."

"Remarkable is one way to put it." She smiled as she thought of Reverance and the swordfight in the rain on Jabiim. Exhausted and bloodied by combat and closer than ever, she did not think she could love him more. It was a foolish notion of course, she ached for him in their separation. The days and weeks stretched out into a blur of uncounted time but she clung to the warmth of the fiery crystal as reassurance that somewhere in that vast darkness, he was doing what he must and that they would find each again. She raised the glass to her lips, albeit a little loosely, a drop of the whiskey escaping around the fine vessel to spill over her lip and down her chin. She caught it with her other hand, the surprise of her sloppiness causing her to inhale quickly and cough. She set the glass down and coughed the whiskey out of her windpipe for a minute before she shook it off and leaned back.
"There is risk in everything but you are correct. Our entanglement is a sore spot. We are rarely allowed to indulge our feelings and try to hide it. Of course, it is stupid since we are both powerful lords in our own right. If someone were to try to take either one of us out, it would be a ridiculously huge mistake."
She looked over at him, chuckling as she picked up the glass again. "You know that the irony of all this is? I gave into the darkside after I lost people close to me and there was nothing I could do about it because I was a nobody. I have risen to power and command a strong and diverse empire. And yet, the position I hold keeps me from knowing that love again. Maybe once I am declared Emperor, we will see each other again. Then I will dare the sands of fate to come between us."

"It's a good thought, Sin,"he said quietly "and I hope it works out for you."
The fallen Whill chuckled sympathetically as the Sith Lord burst into a coughing fit, patting her on the back to help clear her windpipe. His engineered body was slightly buzzed but not truly drunk...or so he thought until he tried to stand up for the purpose of fetching a napkin.
"Whoashit."
He tried again a few seconds later, this time compensating for the room's spin, and made it to the kitchenette without incident. Dresden grabbed some napkins and a bottle of water without incident, and plopped back down on the couch with a contented sigh.
"I don't think it's supposed to go down that hole."

She laughed as he wobbled wondering if him being drunk was a rare enough occurrence that he didn't figure he was that drunk, but then again they had been sitting on that couch for a while. He remarked about her coughing and she couldn't help the sassy retort.
"That's what she said." Sin took the napkin and wiped her hands on it, the whiskey set aside for the moment. "Speaking of inappropriate comments, how do shards have sex?" Oh yes, her filters were all gone now. It was like Cygnus' funeral all over again, only this time there was no Dragus with glitterstim and Inky trying his best to cut her off.

Well that was a new one.
"Generally speaking, they don't. Shards reproduce asexually."
Dresden knew that, statistically speaking, sex was a fairly common topic for discussion among organics. Get any group of them together and, barring societal or species taboos, it was bound to come up sooner or later.
"Those that can get their hands on replicant droids will often as not give it a go, and they seem to like it well enough."

"So do you know how to use that thing?" She gestured vaguely in his direction, referring to his now human form, and wondering just how much he had explored the new vessel he now inhabited. "I don't know if anyone told you, but those chemical signals in our little heads actually end up feeling pretty good." She burst into a fit of giggles as she tried to imagine a moment between Eralam and the Major turning into something deeper, and the awkward fumbling that was sure to follow.
"Besides, the way they looked at me, that's what they thought I was here for. So are you leading a secret life of being a robogigalo? Or are you banging slutty organics before the candle burns out?"

It was unfortunate that she asked the question just as Dresden was taking a sip from his glass. While the whiskey was extraordinarily smooth going down, it was not nearly so kind to his nasal passages.
"ACK-"
It took a minute for the sputtering coughing fit to die out. It was probably a good thing he had grabbed the napkins when he did.
"Honestly, I haven't had a chance to try out the equipment. Wouldn't know where to start, really. I know how it all works on a mechanical level, but..."
The former Shard shrugged.
"Knowing how it works doesn't get me any closer to using it. And hell, haven't even really had much in the way of desire to, not until the last few days, for all the good it did. She was shot to shit and then decided I was the devil, and..."
Some part of his brain that wasn't swimming in alcohol had the foresight to clamp his mouth shut before he could say anything stupid.

"Oh really now? The plot thickens. So it's more than you merely shared a moment with her. You desired her. What stopped you, the fear of disappointing with your inexperience or the inexperience of guiding the social interaction to sex?"
Sinistra had sat forward now, eagerly awaiting his answer. Her eyes were bright and her mood was down right mirthful. Giddy even. It should have been frightening, as the only she usually looked like this was when someone was about to be tortured to death.

Dresden glared indignantly. If he was frightened by Sin's enthusiasm, he didn't show it.
"Neither. It is not in my nature to take what isn't offered. If she wasn't such a wreck, both physically and emotionally, things might have...might be different. But she is, and they aren't."
The former Shard took a moment to compose himself. Being angry with Sinistra would accomplish nothing. Once the initial anger subsided, his sense of humor peaked its head up from behind the alcoholic stupor.
"Besides," he said with a mischievous glint in his eye. "Who the hell would want their first time to be with someone just as clueless as they are? Gods, I think the universe might just implode from the awkwardness."

"A lot of people have an awkward go of it the first time. You learn to do better the next time. That's all."
She sat back and scooped up a glass of water, drinking it in great gulps to help get rid of the tightness around her temples. It was the start of a hangover, she knew it, but perhaps she could lessen the severity if she remembered not to push herself to drink all his whiskey in one go.
"If you're going to get the human experience, you might as well get your money's worth. See what sex is like and why we spend so damn much money on it."
She swatted away his irritation with her pressing questions, with another gulp of water. When the glass was lowered, she spit out a question with a pointed finger, gesturing at his crotch.
"If you're not having sex with it, are you at least playing with it? Most human males can't leave it alone for more than a few hours, I find."

"You'll also find I'm not most human males."
This statement is true in more ways than one. That aside, this line of questioning was getting awful personal. Time to turn the tables.
"What about you? How do you keep yourself warm on those cold, lonely nights?"
