Markus Grimm knelt down in the grass and laid a bouquet of flowers before a simple headstone, that read: Jaymes Markus Grimm, Jr. Beloved Son May you find peace, In the Light's eternal embrace. Resting his hand atop the headstone, Markus closed his eyes. ~ ~ The tiny frame of a little boy snuggled beside him, sound asleep. Markus lifted the blanket over to shield his son from the cold, brushing the boy's dark bangs aside as he began to sing softly. "Someday, When I'm old and gray, You'll be all grown and say, To me,
Dad, Sing that song you used to sing, When I was a tiny little thing, That song you sang to soothe my fears, You held my hand all through the night, You stroked my hair you hugged me tight, You sang all my fears away,
Dad, I knew then what I know now, That you'd always be there somehow, To always keep me safe,
Keep you safe,
Son, Someday I will go, Gone away where old men go, But you won't be alone, You'll have your own little ones, To cherish and to love, Just as I love you,
Remember me on those nights, When you sing to them this lullaby, Remember how I sang to you, I held your hand all through the night, I stroked your hair I held you tight, To show you how much I love you, I gave you all I had to give, I'd give more, even my life too,
So sleep now and dream away, Think no more don't be afraid, The day is far and it will delay, Close your eyes and sleep tight, I'll be here all through the night, Daddy won't ever leave you." The child stirred beside his father, but otherwise remained fast asleep. Markus kissed his hair and settled down to sleep beside him, wrapping his arm around the boy. ~ ~ "...close your eyes and sleep tight, I'll be here all through the night, Daddy won't ever leave you." Markus' voice broke at the last words as he tried to stifle the trembling of his jaw. Tears flowed freely as he squeezed his eyes shut. "Good night, son. I love you." And when he left the following morning the only trace of him having been there were the bouquet of flowers. The teardrops having all dried up. For Samuel Michael G. '13-'13 You weren't able to have a chance at life, but I'll always remember what could have been.
