"Your point? He's older and allegedly wiser. In a situation like this, responsibility falls on the shoulders of the one who should have known better. There's many a legal system where he could go to jail for that, and if he were still a Jedi, that could be grounds for expulsion from the order. You're not exactly blameless, but your mistake was being young and drunk and in pain. His was taking advantage of that."
Mike knew that some would consider his views to be archaic, or even chauvinistic, but that was fine, because he figured the ones that thought like that were generally the ones likely to pull a stunt like that. He was more progressive than many a legal system that would have automatically considered the male to be at fault; it just so happened that this was the case now.
His grin cracked into a genuine smile when she mentioned flying lessons.
"I'm not gonna live that down, am I?"

Alexis shrugged. She didn't feel that it was her place to defend him further, particularly when deep down she was pleased that someone, in this case Mike, actually valued her enough as a person to care about what happened to her. After recent experiences it was almost shockingly normal.
"You might be able to," she responded in kind to his smile, "but it'll take a long time."
"The Lawn Dart, you called it?" she challenged him in a friendly fashion. "Dart would seem to imply some kind of grace, wouldn't you say?"

Mike laughed. He couldn't help it."Clearly, you haven't seen a Gungan try to play darts. Those crazy little suckers can't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside." Well, with the serious bits out of the way, Mike didn't feel bad about turning on the holoprojector."Right, so these are the fighters." There were three Sith fighters sitting in a hole in the sand. The sides of the hole had been stabilized with a plasticizing agent that held back the dunes, which was handy, because the thing was at least 30 meters deep, which explained why the Jawas hadn't found them."They haven't figured out exactly why the things were buried, but what we do know is that they are amazingly well preserved. They'll never fly again, but I thought you might find them interesting."

"I've seen some holovids, but never an honest-to-goodness real, live Gungan. I thought perhaps it was a skewed portrayal, but you make it sound almost understated."
Alexis leaned closer, peering at the nearest of the three Sith fighters with an intense gaze. While she and her x-wing had a very close bond, and she had the basic skills necessary to fly an assortment of ships, historic Sith vehicles were not on that list.
"I wonder how they got there."
What a pity he thought they would never fly. She wondered if they required special skills, or if it was just the preferred fighter of the Sith for cosmetic reasons. She almost asked if he had any popcorn to go along with his state-of-the-art holoprojector, but she bit her tongue.

"By and large, the portrayals are actually kind of disgusting. Need a bumbling, unintelligent fool? Bring in a Gungan. They are uncoordinated as hell, but that mainly stems from the fact that they didn't evolve for life on land, and they haven't really adapted as well as, say, a Mon Cal or Quarren. In the water, they're about as graceful as any aquatic species I've ever met, and while they have their share of idiots, so does humanity. Their scientists have some pretty impressive accomplishments under their belts, as anyone that's seen their cities can attest. Their semi-permeable shielding technology is amazing."
Back on the subject of the ships, Mike manipulated the hologram to overlay a schematic wire-frame over the the image of the ships themselves. It was clear what parts were missing and what had been added on, and it was helpful for getting a good idea of what shape the fighters were in. Once the overlay was added, he removed the background, leaving only the fighters themselves. At times like this, nearly bleeding out in the ER from a gut wound nearly seemed worth it.
"It might not have done these ships any good, mind. Keeps out liquid and energy and holds in atmosphere, but sand falls in exactly none of those categories. All the evidence suggests that the ships were buried deliberately, as evidenced by the fact that there seems to be surprisingly little in the way of weather damage. The damage, they think, was probably already in place when they were buried, which makes it unlikely that they were placed there for the purpose of being used as escape craft or maybe a private reserve for a warlord."
Mike was clearly in science mode. His usual humor and the tendency towards profanity gave was to a matter of factness that one might associate with a talking head brought in on HNN to explain something vaguely sciency, the primary difference being that he actually knew what he was talking about.
"If I'm honest, one of the reasons I wanted to show you this deals with your experience in a fighter. I can tell that the ships are damaged, but I can't tell a laser blast from a meteor strike, and everyone onsite seems to be equally flummoxed. The damage here and here" he pointed to a series of jagged holes on the wing of the middle craft and a nearly identical series of holes across the fuselage of the craft on the right "almost look like someone shot the things up with an automatic slugthrower, but we just don't know."

Alexis nodded in understanding, "It's one of the things I have seen without seeing, but I would like to see these underwater bubble cities some day," her tone was a bit wistful as that implied an excursion based at least in part on sight-seeing, something she had never really seemed to have time for. As for Gungans themselves, it is easy enough to take anything or anyone out of its proper element and make them look like graceless bumpkins, so she had her reservations there as well.
With her elbow on her knee and her chin propped on her hand, Alexis was absentmindedly tapping the tip of her nose with her fingers while examining the overlay Mike had superimposed on what was left of the Sith fighters. "Buried deliberately on Tatooine?" she repeated to herself, a frown creasing her forehead just over her nose. Intelligent eyes flicked over the damage Mike was pointing out, but after a second or two she looked over at him instead, feeling a vague sense like that caused by a memory of pain, fleeting quickly, but there for a flicker of time. She wondered how he'd gotten hold of this. And while she was thinking the damage was caused by someone who wanted to hide that fact, she hedged, "So... I'm guessing this calls for a closer look?" Besides, Sith fighters, how often did one really get to play around with something of that age? They looked like they belonged in a museum more than anything else, and depending on how old the images were she was guessing they wouldn't stay in this condition for an indefinite amount of time.
"How did you find this, Mike?" she finally asked.

Mike shrugged.
"I didn't. The find was made by an acquaintance of mine who was looking for something completely unrelated."
The shadow that passed across Alexis's face told him that there was more going on here than even he had originally believed. Was this one of her odd premonitions? He hadn't sensed anything ominous, but he knew that she was in tune with aspects of the Force that he could never hope to tap.
"I do plan to have a look at the fighters eventually, but they won't be on Tatooine for long. There have already been a few minor skirmishes among local gangsters and warlords over who gets to kill the researchers and take the things, and the mercs they've hired won't renew their contract. They'll be headed offplanet as soon as they can arrange for a home."
There were any number of museums, universities, and other research centers that would have gladly taken the fighters, and according to his friend, there was already a pretty significant bidding war over who would end up with the fighters. The research team had put in three conditions. The first was that the fighters all be kept together. The second was that the original research team would take the lead on the investigation, and the third was that they could bring in outside consultants. The third clause had been made with Mike in mind specifically.
"I've got an invite to take a look as soon as they get set up. There aren't many Jedi archaeologists willing to work with folks outside of the order, so there are a lot of misconceptions about how much the Force can tell us. Sian and I have worked together before so he knows that most of the rumors are crap, but he's not above capitalizing on them if need be. I'm not sure what he has in mind, but I definitely plan on heading that way in a few months. I will, of course, be looking for a pilot that can land a ship without endangering everyone within a ten mile radius."
Though Mike's expression remained serious, there was a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
"And if that pilot just so happens to be an experienced starfighter jockey who might have valuable insight on the project, well, I suppose this pilot would be more than welcome to take a look along with me."

"Oh?" She knew that was often the way of things. When looking for something the Force often led one to something else that proved later on to be needed in some way. Sometimes it was hard to connect the dots until years after the fact.
Alexis hadn't felt anything specific relating to the fighters now, but she had thought that Mike had somehow experienced pain over this and later decided it was worth it. She had only been concerned for a friend.
"So, there is not much time, but you are confident these relics of a past era will still be here in similar condition after the passage of a few months?" She did not want to miss an opportunity like this over delaying, but at the same time, it was not really her concern, and Mike had been nice enough to include her in this for his own reasons.
Alexis looked at him, startled, though she realized immediately that he was teasing her, and with a brief flicker of embarrassment she shot right back at him, "Well, I suppose that rules you out then, doesn't it?"
Attempting to look like she didn't really care about it, she tapped her fingers on her knee nonchalantly as she asked offhand, "I guess you've got someone in mind then, don't you? Otherwise I could be tempted to apply for the position..."

It was a shitty situation, but not one that they could do much about.
"Even if we left now, the ships would probably be off the planet by the time we get there."
Mike deftly dodged the jab at his piloting skills by virtue of pretending to study his fingernails.
"Weeelllll, I suppose I could take you into consideration. Do you have experience ferrying cranky archaeologists to far-off planets for potentially dangerous and almost certainly tedious research?"

Alexis arched an eyebrow curiously, head tilted microscopically to the left, "Then how are you intending to get a look at them? Are you advocating an interception in the midst of their removal?"
His fingernails? Really?? Alexis didn't know a whole lot about Mike at this point yet, but she knew that his appearance and the state of his fingernails didn't generally rank very high on his list of priorities. There was probably some kind of fancy saying about it too, something along the lines of 'don't trust an archaeologist with clean fingernails,' similar to the fact that one should be wary of trusting a thin cook, or a teetotaling bartender...
She rolled her eyes and thought about it for a few minutes. "Well," she hedged in response, "I don't know about 'cranky'---he stayed pretty much confined to his quarters last time. It wasn't potentially dangerous either, it was positively deadly, so I suppose that counts. We didn't even make it to the tedious research stage. But, I wouldn't mind going with you," she shifted a bit to get comfortable, "and it was you that brought it up in the first place and tried to attract my interest in these Sith fighters. Of course, I'd have to see if I can work it into my schedule," she finished with a smile.

"I'm advocating visiting the place where they eventually end up as part of the research team, not stealing the damn things."
Mike grinned sheepishly.
"Touche. I need a pilot, and you're the padawan with a plan. Or you will have a plan. After I give you one."
Cue awkward silence.
"Sooooo...What have you been up to since last we spoke?
It wasn't uncommon for Jedi to go months without seeing each other, what with missions taking friends to the far end of the galaxy. Catching up could be awkward, since missions were often top secret. There were things that could be discussed, things that couldn't, and things that were best left unsaid, whether because of awkwardness or embarrassment or because they just didn't need to be said. Fortunately, they had the single most awkward issue out of the way.

= Diamonte’s Suite =
As the HUD led me down corridors, i found a door that seemed to be marked by Pixar as my office/room.
looking around the room i was a bit in awe… it certainly seemed Elaborate for a jedi… but there were other things that i thought were more important, so i put it out of my mind
“Ok pixar… what ‘new info did you want to show me? also i need you to adjust the power level of the vibrate mode.”
handing me a data pad Pixar began to detail out data from the battle of yavin not yet stored in the archives, it seemed for some time that in the final push before the Mandalorians claimed victory, Dr. Levi Rose was instrumental saving countless lives during the battle… and then beyond that, he managed to save the lives of 8 padawans. turning to pixar i muse
“These acts are amazing… if this is true why is this man surfing any sentence whatsoever?”
::That’s the thing, i can’t say. the part of the database that Deals with Dr. Rosenfield’s sentence has been redacted and sealed by a combined order from republic and jedi… i am trying to bypass it… but coruscant wasn’t built in a day.::
“Do what you can, when you have everything compiled summon the good doctor.” and with that i pulled a meditation pad and assuming a lotus pose, i fell asleep as my mind wandered into the heavens in search of a moment of pure silence, pure rest.

Alexis rolled her eyes dramatically. "I wasn't advocating stealing them, you clown. There's no way they'll fly, so that would automatically be doomed to failure from the jump." She smiled to let him know she wasn't serious. There was nothing she could think of that would convince her to steal them. She had the most amazing fighter in the universe already as far as she was concerned. And while she was naturally very curious about these relics of a bygone era, stealing them was not what she had in mind.
"Yeah, I think as long as you let me take care of the flying part of things, we'll be fine. The ground side of things is your area of expertise." She could of course have brought up the whole 'exiting hyperspace aft over bow' thing, but in this case she took the moral high ground and stayed there by saving that for later reference. However, he had brought up something else. "You know I will not be a padawan forever, right?"
She grimaced. His question immediately reminded her of one thing, and though she did blush faintly, she recovered with only a second's hesitation. Mike had not judged her, instead he'd been supportive in a way that she had not experienced in a long time, and really had not allowed herself to hope for again. Losing first Nathan and then Dav had caused her more emotional pain than she'd thought herself capable of surviving. But, she'd done so.
Alexis turned slightly, so he could see the jagged raw cut that was still healing under her left eye tracing back towards her ear. She pointed to it, gently brushing the edge of it since it was stinging. Bright red smeared across her fingertip in response to her light touch. "I went to Nar Shaddaa---to my old 'home' to settle a ghost and an old debt. What about you?" She'd never have outright admitted it, but she had kind of missed him since they had parted ways after leaving Roon and returning to Honoghr.

"I know you won't be, but until then, neener neener neener."
Hmm. Odd. It wasn't like Mike to be so flippant, but he was in something of a good mood. Or at least he was until Alexis pointed out the sizable cut she had picked up. Anywhere but Nar Shaddaa, that would have been something of a major wound. On there, it was barely a scratch. A rough world, indeed.
"Oh, you know, the usual. I've had my nose stuck into books pretty much nonstop. That's actually what brought me here."

Alexis simply stared at him in dignified shock. Had Mike lost his mind? (Or had his writer just had too much bourbon and cola?) Still, she refused to reply to his remark, only smiling faintly as his behavior had just deviated greatly from what she was familiar with. Evidently long sojourns of time without much social interaction negatively affected his skills.
"If that is the only way in which you feel superior, Mike, feel free to enjoy it for the time it lasts." Really, the difference in title from padawan to knight was not something that mattered to her except that technically within the Order it meant she had finished her official training period and was fully a Jedi.
"And what book brought you here now?" She felt vaguely disappointed, though she wasn't sure why. Alexis had thought he might eventually come to Yavin because that was where she was working. Even though the Order was unified, it still felt like the Jedi were a bit scattered. The universe was a small place, but it was still all too easy to lose track of one's friends. It was another hint at how drastically her life had been turned upside down that Mike Hamish was a point of stability in her personal universe.

Mike sighed as his attempt at humor fell flat.
"I am never, ever saying that again."
He grinned at Alexis in an embarrassed sort of way, hoping she'd notice he was only teasing. And then it was back to business. Books had been mentioned, and that was a very serious matter indeed.
"In some of the older tales of the Order, there were all sorts of shenanigans going on with the temples here. This place was pretty heavily infested with Sith a few thousand years back, and there were some real divas in the group. Most of theses temples were full up with dark side artifacts and the like. Hell, a fair few were infested by the spirits of the Sith that commisioned them."
This, of course, was fairly common knowledge. Records from the time of the Skywalker Reformation suggested that the earliest Jedi of the time had tangled with a particularly nasty Sith known as Exar Kun.
"What I'm looking for is one that, by all Sithly standards, was built by a disappointment. The one was notable for not being an egotistical maniac, preferring the sort of power that came from science rather than insanity. She apparently was rather painstaking in her approach to fusing science and Sith magics and alchemy into something that was far more than any one by itself. Or at least that's what I'm picking up. Since there is very little in the way of direct references, there's a tremendous amount of guesswork involved in figuring out exactly where her temple is or even if it existed. On top of that, her relative lack of ego may mean that hers is the most dangerous of all. It's going to be quite the adventure."

Alexis contemplated Mike seriously, and then laughed. Her eyes widened as she suddenly stopped, one hand reaching for her throat in surprise as she looked over at him. "I never laugh," she explained quietly. It just wasn't something that had ever had a place in her life. Not that she had never been happy, it just didn't happen very often that she consciously realized it. This was the second time she had laughed that she could remember, and the first time had also been around Mike. "Sorry."
"Didn't Luke Skywalker lose a student to the Dark Side due to Exar Kun's influence from beyond? That was here on Yavin, I thought."
She frowned. The holovids and documentaries that Nathan had sworn by had sometimes been really dry. She had tried to pay attention to all of them, but it just didn't happen like that.
"A Sith without ego?" Alexis frowned. "I thought ego was part of the Sith code. But I don't know if I would classify that as an adventure. It sounds really dangerous."
She didn't want him to get himself killed, but she realized that he could probably take care of himself in just about any situation, unless it involved flying. And he had survived his last experience in interplanetary travel. "Mike, you seem to work alone for the majority of the time. Have you ever thought about working for the Council of First Knowledge?" He didn't feel like a Shadow to her, and she instinctively knew whenever he was around, but she wondered if he really was a freelancer within the Order. "Just in case you ever need backup or something..."

"That is a bit odd,"Mike said. Alexis would probably recognize his expression as the one he adopted when a problem entered the computational space of his brain. Lord knows she had seen it enough trying to teach him to fly. Fortunately for both of them, he had an answer after only a few seconds. "I guess we'll have to keep hanging out and see if we can get you in the habit of laughing more often. It's good for the soul."
It occurred to Mike that he had something that might interest Alexis, and it dealt with that exact incident. He stood up and pulled a datapad from a slot on the top shelf and passed it to her.
"He lost one outright and had another destroy a planet under the influence. This is the story as told by Corran Horn, his personal journal from the time. He had it put in the archive at Luke's insistence some years later. It's a fascinating read."
He sat back down and considered the problem that an egoless Sith presented, both tactically and philosophically.
"There's actually nothing that says they have to be pricks. That's usually a result of heavy dark side use, but when you run across one that can live by the code without turning into a prima dona, you've got something truly scary. Exar Kun tried to break his targets because he enjoyed suffering and proving how powerful he was. If her spirit remains, it might just kill us outright because that's the safer route.
"As for the council, joining them would require actually meeting someone from it. I keep sort of a low profile, and so far, I've not been noticed."

Alexis smiled briefly, amused that Mike was actually trying to figure this out. She'd long since accepted it as a fact of life, to the point that when she had laughed, the sound had startled her. "I'm sure it'll just happen, Mike, no need to worry about it, though I do enjoy hanging out with you. I would guess that it's a leftover from my life on Nar Shaddaa."
She took the datapad and switched it on quickly, skimming over the contents for now as she'd read it more thoroughly later. Brown eyes suddenly looked up at Mike. "Kyp Durron and the Sun Crusher, you mean? Didn't he die as a result of that?" She was fuzzy on the details of that instance of more recent Jedi history. She'd heard Kyp mentioned, but his life hadn't really stuck with her. He was one of those people that she really didn't feel very much in tune with.
After a couple minutes she switched off the datapad and set it on his desk before returning her full attention to him. "Yeah, that does seem to make her a bit unpredictable. And unpredictable is not something one wants in an enemy." She suddenly smiled, "Us as in, you think I'll help you in your search? Or 'us' as in the more general Jedi Order?" she suspected the latter was what he'd meant, but she asked anyway. She didn't know why, whether she wanted it to be the former, or what. In fact, she wished she hadn't asked. But it was too late for that.

"I could see that," he said seriously. "Life in a place like that, it's not easy."
The details of the incident were listed in the book, but Mike decided to give her the short version. "Oddly enough, he lived and went on to become a master. They considered being a Jedi something like a life sentence to hard labor, which is why they didn't take more severe measures."
The question kind of surprised him, as he didn't put much thought into the wording. It was just a general "us," and he hadn't meant anything by it.
"Hadn't really thought that far ahead. You're welcome to come along if you'd like, though it probably will be crazy dangerous and might get us both killed." Now he really did look worried. Mike looked Alexis in the eye. "I wasn't planning on bringing anyone else along with me on this one. It's partly because of the danger, but mostly because any Jedi that come along are likely to try to destroy or lock away anything they find. Never mind the potential historical significance, the Order has long tried to suppress knowledge that they consider dangerous. That's not right. Most scientific research can be dangerous in the wrong hands, but the benefits almost always outweigh the risks. Hiding knowledge is just...wrong. That's the only way I know how to say it."
