Umgul City — Spaceport
Whatever Ares had felt towards his father back then, it no longer was anger at least, but there was still some disappointment. Ares knew the reasons why Virgil had acted that way back then and he also knew most of the underlying reasons but at the same time, it didn't justify the fact that Ares, just like Ryan had been taken for granted, it was all in the past, and now just now he had preferred not knowing what he knew now but it was to be expected in the entire scheme of things. Thankfully for him, Ali was being supportive and she had accepted him back into her life. The kiss she had given him was a welcoming one, he did hold her close to him, affectionately and lovingly before kissing her forehead gently as he listened to what Alisha and Isis were saying to one another.
Right, the whole back and forth between the cousins, he'd rather not step in the middle nor did he even comment further after his whole joke about her ID. Perhaps her titles indeed did make the whole verification of their stuff run much more smoothly. Perhaps, but what did he know anyways? Ares did not work security here and apparently several legislation had changed under Raan and Andros, for better or worse, Ares did not know since he had not delved into the matter deeply.
Remaining mute while Alisha continued to tease her cousin, Ares turned to look at his fiancée when she looked at him letting him know of the arrangements she had made while they were voyaging to Umgul. "Sounds good, thank you for taking care of that, amore." Hugging her again and leaning to peck her lips, Ares smiled when he pulled his head back and looked at everyone before leading them towards the exit of the spaceport to see about that airspeeder.
Once it had been identified which one was for their use, Ares thanked the person who indicated it for them and tipped him before placing everyone's bags in the trunk. "Right, I'll be piloting." Ares said with a smile as he opened the doors to let everyone inside, and he closed the door before jogging to the driver's side so that they could get there towards the lakehouse. Starting the engine, and lifting off in the sky, Ares closed his eyes momentarily and remembered exactly where his sister's home was located. Maneuvering the airspeeder in that direction, Ares set off towards their destination...

*Umgul City, capital of Umgul, the heart of its civilization. Now the scene of a scandal. Aerandir had studied the capital, viewed images and holos, read some history, enough that he would have been able to recognize a couple of landmarks from images or descriptions alone... if his eyes had been more adjusted that was. Atlantis hadn't mentioned the crime scene... They could have passed by the crime scene by now...
The speeder pulled up outside the precinct, and Aerandir, eyes somewhat more adjusted, took a moment to admire the architecture as well as commit it to memory, as well as get a good luck at the surrounding area and its adjacent buildings, its potential blind spots and escape routes... He kept close to the girls as they entered, remaining behind in the waiting area as Serrin checked to see if Atlantis had arrived yet; he had not, though she was sure he would be along shortly. He nodded and stood out of the way, ushering the girls to either side of him.
Normally he didn't wear robes, and so far his impressions were that the Jedi of Umgul were of similar feeling. But seeing as he was both a guest and a representative, in a sense, he had brought along his adventure robes, the only set of robes he owned; they at least looked cool, which had basically been Aerandir's reasoning for picking a set of them over any other type of robes. And, other than Jake's sets of youngling robes he'd brought from Yavin, they were the only robes anyone in his family owned. He'd always left the decision to his sisters and daughters whether or not they wanted any sets of Jedi robes.
They were content not having any, and he was fine with that.
Atlantis himself arrived shortly afterward, just as Serrin predicted, and greeted them with a smile.* "Good morning," *Aerandir returned with a smile and nod of the head.*
"Morning," *offered Michelle, also with a smile.
Atlantis then explained that he had not yet told anyone he'd requested assistance, nor that he himself was planning on stepping back. Aerandir's eyebrows flickered upwards, finding that curious though did not comment. When asked whether they had a good night's sleep, Aerandir chuckled.* "I'd almost forgotten what a good night's sleep was, my youngest only being a few months old." *He realized he hadn't mentioned his family before, though they hadn't had much time to discuss that the previous day. Some other time...
That was when a woman appeared, a higher-ranking official, who addressed Atlantis only with his name, seeming less-than-thrilled in both appearance and voice. Aerandir kept his expression neutral, a master skill of his, though he speculated upon what might lead her to seem displeased... Michelle was a little less skilled in hiding her expressions, though the one she showed was mere concerned and confused curiosity, sharing similar thoughts as her brother.
Atlantis introduced each of them to the woman, Aerandir giving a polite half-bow as his name was mentioned, as did Michelle. The woman's name was Madieke Aninh, the leader of the investigation. Atlantis went on to explain their presence, apologize for lack of communication, and what the new group of Jedi knew. When it seemed there was an opportunity to speak, Aerandir took it, opening with another half-bow.*
"Our services are yours," *he spoke as he straightened, folding his arms.* "We as much as you wish only to uncover the truth, whatever that may be, and bring it to light." *He almost wanted to make a contradiction to Atlantis's statement that they would do a better job than any Jedi of Umgul, but he stayed his tongue; this was no time for modesty. So instead, he smiled a little and instead commented,* "My girls here may seem young, but their experience will speak for them, I assure you."
*Grinning, Michelle nodded.* "I'm ready for anything!" *she stated proudly, looking completely eager and unperturbed by their surroundings, the situation, or even the chill tone of the Ranger.*

*The journey to Umgul City was spent attempting to adjust to the misty atmosphere, which wasn't easy... The mistiest place she had seen before had been the valley behind the Felucian village, and while that was quite misty, her vision still hadn't been completely obscured. Here though... it was really thick. Hard to see through, but they would have to learn how if they were going to carry out this investigation properly.
If they truly could learn to see through this wit ease, she could hardly imagine how well her vision would be once they were back home out of the mists...
Lokay spent the trip on her lap; at first, he had been perturbed by the speeder's movement, as though fearful they were about to take flight, but when the speeder remained on the ground, he settled a little. She idly stroked his scales and the backs of his wings as they drew closer to the city, the scene of the crime...
A real investigation. It had been quite some time since she had been on one, so long, in fact, that she had been more of a tagalong than a participant. This time, though, she was to be actively involved... She had taken several steeling breaths, mentally preparing herself for all this, ready to put her skills and her mind to the test. A murder, an attempted framing of an innocent individual, and mysterious culprits who may or may not have been close to the family... It was very intricate, and Morgan was eager to get to the bottom of this, clearing a good man's name...
They arrived at the precinct. She ushered Lokay up to her shoulder before exiting the speeder, attempting to peer through the mists. She could see a little better she supposed, but she would have felt better if she could have just blown all the mist away wherever she went. Maybe if she focused and tried to use the Force to help her see through it better—*
"Woah!" *she gasped softly, as the lines of energy appeared before her, spreading through the mists. She recognized the phenomenon as shatterpoint, but there were no fissures here; made sense to her, as you couldn't exactly break mist. But the lines seemed to be links... Shatterpoints weren't just weaknesses to destroy physical materials, but weak points in an overall bigger picture, such as an important stronghold in a war, or a person someone held dear...
Atlantis mentioned being able to track someone through the mist somehow. So essentially, the entire mist of Umgul was a shatterpoint, comprised of people's everyday lives and passageway through it in their daily activities...
Now if only she could learn that trick of Atlantis's...
Suddenly she realized she had trailed behind her party, so she quickly made to catch up to them, entering the precinct and standing beside her daddy. Atlantis met them and greeted them, and Morgan smiled and greeted him back. As for whether they had a good night's sleep... Well, yes, Morgan did, when she actually fell asleep that was; she had trouble actually falling asleep at first, but she didn't want anyone to worry about her, so she only nodded in response.
Then a ranger appeared—Madieke Aninh, Atlantis introduced—and she didn't seem happy to see Atlantis, or any of them. Morgan almost felt a little offended, and also wondered if they believed Andros was innocent... She hoped not. But why else would she seem displeased by Atlantis's presence, and apparently by their own as well? Finally her daddy spoke, offering their services with a bow and expressing their desire to uncover the truth. Then he put in a good word for Michelle and herself, and, after Michelle spoke some words of enthusiasm, Morgan offered a grin.*
"Yeah! I'm little, but I'm dangerous!" *She giggled at her paraphrasing of something she heard her daddy say one time. Hopefully the woman would cheer up a little, but she probably had a lot of hard work with this investigation and all. Still, Morgan didn't like feeling like she was unwelcome...*

23rd Precinct
Smiling when Atlantis arrives and greets us, I say, "Good morning," and then, after arching the thin ridge of muscle over my left eye when Atlantis explains that he had not made the investigators we are here to assist aware of the fact that he would be requesting that we do so - an odd decision he does not explain his reasoning for - laugh when Aerandir comments on the fact that the ability to sleep through the night had not often been possible for him after the birth of his daughter.
The Sector Ranger, whom I recognize from when I was last on Umgul though we were never formally introduced, arrives not long after Atlantis, her demeanor surprisingly icy given the fact that from what I had seen of her interaction with Atlantis previously they appeared somewhat close. Nodding when introduced by Atlantis, I clasp my hands behind my back as Tchin, my right lekku, swishes to curl around the outside of my hip, and listen as he goes on to explain to Madieke why we are all here; his somewhat contrite tone when apologizing for his previous behavior affording some insight into what may have given rise to the chilliness of the Sector Ranger's demeanor.
After the others have expressed their desire to lend their aid to the investigation in their own unique ways, I add my own, electing to meet Madieke's icy tone with one of simple, unadorned respectful courtesy, "As the others have said, we are at your disposal, and will do all we can to help you bring the investigation to a successful resolution. If you have the time to bring us up to speed, and would let us know where our efforts would be of most use to you, we can begin contributing to the investigation."

Appearances. The same brush. Hold back. Clean slate.
Madieke's expression remains unchanged as she nods in response to Atlantis' apology, the fact he chooses to do so in front of an audience making the gesture seem an empty one to her, more for the benefit of keeping up appearances in front of his cohorts than sincerely intended. Clucking her tongue softly when Atlantis explains that he hadn't chosen to share the majority of the details of the investigation's progress thusfar, Madieke doesn't find that surprising in the least, nor does she appear impressed in the least by the rationalization that Atlantis' decision had been made to keep his cohorts free from bias since, in her opinion, evidence and facts could easily have shared without biasing them, and would have made integrating them into the investigation more easily accomplished, and would not require her to spend time briefing them that could have been spent actively investigating.
Turning her attention to the Jedi Atlantis has enlisted, the chill in her gaze absent and revealing that it had been inspired by Atlantis alone, Madieke listens as they each make a nice little speech that, if nothing else, might reveal a little about them to her. Calmcacil and Roma both seem to carry and conduct themselves more like the Jedi Madieke has worked with in the past, and their calm, cool and collected fronts not possessed of the furtive air that she had begun to note in Atlantis and Vos the longer she worked alongside them. Madieke has just finished reminding herself that she should probably not paint all Jedi with the same brush after her less than inspiring experience with Atlantis and Vos when the two younger Jedi chirp up and remind her not to get her hopes up too high, the eagerness of one seeming misplaced given the crimes they are here to help investigate, and the giggly declaration of the other that she is dangerous seeming profoundly un-Jedi-like to Madieke. Reminding herself that the two girls are young, and prone to the lapses in form that come along with it, Madieke decides to reserve judgement until she has seen how they acquit themselves in other situations, well aware of the fact that she herself is probably not making the best of first impressions given the impact Atlantis has on her mood.
Professionalism replacing the frost that had characterized her interaction with Atlantis, Madieke offers a stiff half-bow to the Jedi after they have all spoken, saying less tersely than she otherwise might to avoid sounding as brusque as she knows she often can, "On behalf of the Sector Rangers and the UPD, I thank you all for your offer to assist in the investigation. Rising from the half-bow, Madieke says, If you'll give me a moment to let the surveillance team I was on my way to join know that I'll be delayed, I'll fill you in on what we've learned so far. Ice returning to her tone, Madieke returns her attention to Atlantis and, gathering from what he said that he won't be sticking around, says, Atlantis," by way of farewell, giving him an almost imperceptible nod to let him know that she has not forgotten their agreement to keep certain things out of the investigation that he had expressed a desire to hold back.
Motioning for the Jedi to follow, Madieke heads towards the rear of the station as she explains, "The other members of the investigating team, two UPD detectives and a fellow Sector Ranger, are currently out on assignments, so I will need to introduce you all to them later. Lifting a finger to excuse herself as they continue walking towards the conference room they have been given to use as a command center, Madieke comms the members of the surveillance team she was on her way to join when Atlantis and his cohorts arrived to let them know she will be later than anticipated. Reaching the conference room, an unremarkable space including the requisite round table and large board upon which a timeline of the crimes being investigated has been assembled, Madieke nods towards the chairs around the table and says, Make yourselves comfortable. Walking towards the also apparently mandatory stim-caf maker, Madieke pours herself a cup while asking the two adult Jedi, Stim-caf? Glancing towards the younger Jedi, Madieke even almost, but not quite, manages a smile as she asks, Get you two anything to drink, eat? Once the drinks or snacks issue has been handled, Madieke sits on the edge of the table with her back facing the board so that she can use it during her briefing, and to avoid wasting anyone's time by repeating what they already know, asks, What all do you know so far?" Atlantis said that the group is a clean slate, but Madieke finds that unlikely since he would have told them some things when asking for their help, and they may also have done their own research.

Whatever Madieke was thinking, actually to Atlantis it wasn't something that affected him. Clearly between the two of them, it had not worked out in terms of working together and that was to be expected on his side, he avoided working with people who didn't understand him any longer, but the fact that she still had that chilling attitude, that was all up to her, something that didn't affect Atlantis anyways. He had already said his piece and apologize, and perhaps he should have done that more privately but he figured that this was going to be the last time they would really be seeing one another further anyways.
But in any case, what was done was done and couldn't be undone, he just looked at the Jedi he had been with and inclined his head before hearing his datapad pinging to indicate he had received a message. Glancing at the message from Crystal, he smiled at her request and replied to let her know that he would be taking care of that.
"Madieke," Atlantis had noticed that subtle sign and didn't comment further, he turned to look at Aerandir and his family along with Serrin. "Perhaps see you later, hopefully." Atlantis told them before inclining his head as a way to bid all of them, or mainly them farewell and not even saying another thing in Madieke's direction since after all she was displeased with him, not much he could do about that any longer anyways.
Either way, turning around on his heels, Atlantis walked up a flight of stairs to take the most inconspicuous exit from the precinct, he did not want to be faced with the press again and he used the mist to his advantage to conceal himself and just go and make that purchase that was required of him until he returned to the lakehouse which was almost immediately after getting the things he needed.

*Aerandir's smile grew faintly wider at Morgan's declaration, recognizing the line she'd paraphrased, successfully resisting a chuckle given the situation. Face reverting to a little more stern, he then nodded as Serrin spoke to Ranger Aninh to reaffirm her words, noting that the ranger was clearly not annoyed by the rest of the Jedi. Well, maybe ever so slightly, but not because of them. Her relationship with Atlantis must have been... interesting, to say the least.
Ranger Aninh returned their bow and thanked them for their offer, becoming as professional as her job no doubt required. After asking them to wait a moment, she bid Atlantis farewell, coolly once more... Interesting indeed. As she turned, Atlantis gave them a nod of the head and bid them all farewell, a gesture Aerandir and Michelle returned, though of the two, only Aerandir replied, dropping the formality from his tone.* "Take care, see you tonight I suppose."
*He and Michelle both took a moment to note his exit up a flight of stairs instead of towards the main entrance... No doubt attempting to keep a low profile still. They then turned to follow Ranger Aninh as she beckoned, explaining that they would meet the other investigators later; said investigators were a fellow ranger and a pair of detectives. He nodded, then, when they reached the conference room, took a seat as offered. He took in his surroundings briefly, not too concerned about surveillance equipment, though definitely was interested in the writings on the board. He kept his eyes to himself for the moment, politely declining the offer of drinks, as did Michelle, saying she had a big breakfast.
Then at last Ranger Aninh asked them what they knew. Aerandir leaned back in his chair, interlocking his fingers and setting them on his lap.* "A knuckle-guarded lightsaber with a synthetic crystal, most likely wielded by a left-handed Makashi practitioner, killed multiple victims—I was not told the number—including who is believed to be the leader of a criminal organization." *He paused briefly to recall the previous day's discussions; he had meant to take down notes but Bruce's call had put that out of his mind. Nodding to himself, he sat up and concluded with,* "Everything else I've been told is mere speculation, which is useless to me until I glean more facts. Until I arrived here, Atlantis is the only resident of the world I and mine have met face-to-face."
*Michelle had sat up straight in her seat the entire time, watching her brother curiously. Admittedly she wasn't entirely sure what info she would have given, if any of the speculation would have been useful, or just the facts. She took note of what he said and how he said it, though felt she probably would have given similar information. But his attention turned to someone else, Master Roma, and Michelle looked toward her as well as he said,* "Master Roma, as I understand, knows a touch more than I do."

*When Atlantis announced his leave, Morgan smiled and waved at him as he left, calling out,* "Bye Atlantis!" *After him. She then turned back to the ranger, who, quite fortunately, seemed a lot less annoyed with the rest of them than she did Atlantis. In fact, when she'd led them to the conference room and asked them if they wanted anything to eat or drink, she almost seemed inviting. That was a relief, though Morgan couldn't help but wonder if she had anything to do with it.*
"No thank you!" *she politely declined, looking briefly toward Lokay. She contemplated joking about the tailring's appetite, but held it in. She sat on the other side of her daddy, opposite from Michelle, as the ranger asked them what they knew. Daddy spoke first, listing a handful of facts they were told... and that was it. Morgan scrunched her face in confusion; that was it? Nothing about how it could be someone who knew about Andros' alignment? That the victim might not have even been a criminal? Not even a declaration that Andros was innocent?!*
"But—" *she squeaked, but stopped when her daddy only continued, explaining that speculation was useless until he had more facts. She stared at him in slight disbelief for a moment before at last frowning, sinking into her chair a little. She knew he was professional when he needed to be, but that was almost too professional for her tastes. At least say he was innocent!
She tilted her head back, taking in a deep breath and exhaling it through her nostrils somewhat loudly, like a sigh. Master Roma knew more? Good, maybe she would speak up for Andros' behalf. If not, Morgan was probably going to! Then again, she didn't know Andros... but they would tonight! That would probably truly cement her feelings about him. Plus, this was an important conversation, so she had to keep reserved... maybe her daddy's professionalism was right after all... Not that she liked it. Though she supposed that little sigh of hers wasn't quite the best either... she blushed a little, then straightened, looking down.* "I'm a Jedi, I must control myself," *she silently mouthed along with her thoughts, before lifting her head to listen...*

From the difference between the Sector Ranger's comportment and tone when speaking with me and the Calmcacils and when speaking to Atlantis, I think it is safe to conclude that the woman's earlier less than enthusiastic response was due in large part, if not entirely, to something between them; something that I can hope, given the differences in her attitude, she will not be permitting to bleed over into the working relationship between her team and the Calmcacils and I.
Nodding when Atlantis makes his farewell, I smile and say, "Until later," as I am fairly certain that we will be able to join him and the others after the Sector Ranger has briefed us; unless, of course, she feels we might be of more immediate use.
Following the Sector Ranger into the room in which she has set up her command center, I take a seat when invited to do so, my lekku coiling up to flip over my shoulders so they are not behind my back when I sit, and then lift a hand with a shake of my head to decline the offer of stim-caf. While I can well understand the Sector Ranger's desire to avoid repeating things we have already heard, I also know that what we have heard - consisting almost solely of those things, in my case at any rate, that have been reported in the media - is not likely to be complete or even necessarily accurate given how law enforcement often omits details to eliminate false confessions, and so after Aerandir suggests that I might know more than he has summarized when answering Madieke, I purse my lips in thought briefly before saying, "I'm not sure that I know any more actually. I'm familiar with what has been covered in the media, which is to say what the UPD made public in their statement, and what the attorney representing the two survivors of the assault on the primary victim's estate alleged in his statement. Lifting a hand, palm upwards, with an apologetic smile, I suggest to Madieke, It might be quite beneficial for us to hear your account of the investigation in chronological order, free from the need to make things more . . . palatable for the media?"

No surprise. Cultivating. Full disclosure. Outweighed. Adamant.
It comes as no surprise that the Jedi ultimately request a full briefing. Atlantis keeping them in almost entirely the dark fits with what Madieke has witnessed first hand of how he plays things after all. Standing up and walking towards the board after Masters Calmcacil and Roma spell out what they do know, Madieke launches into her synopsis of the investigation so far without any unnecessary preamble.
"Two nights ago a lone Force sensitive assailant armed with the lightsaber you, she glances at Master Calmcacil, heard about assaulted the estate of Tok'la Sike, she taps the holopic of a male Bothan, killing Sike and six of the eight armed guards patrolling the estate grounds. Nothing was stolen from the estate, and given the fact that Sike was the last victim killed, his death taking place several moments after those of his security team, it's been tentatively concluded that the killer was there to get information of some kind from Sike. Sike was the head of a known criminal organization operating out of Umgul City that is involved in narcotics trafficking, money laundering, and protection rackets. Sike was also very careful, and had an exceptionally talented accountant. He had been on the UPD radar for years, but they were never able to successfully build a case against him. He took good care of his people, cultivating a degree of loyalty not often seen in criminal enterprises. Rather than offer testimony against Sike, for example, those of his people that were successfully prosecuted would clam up and do their time. The two survivors of the attack, Madieke moves to tap the holopics of two male Niktos, were no exception, both long time associates of Sike's with extensive criminal records. They've done time in the past, but have been clean or careful since their release, so it should come as no surprise that neither is willing to testify about Sike's involvement in criminal activity even though he's dead. What the witnesses are willing to go on the record about is the alleged identity of the assailant, who they both state without equivocation was none other than Andros Vyridian."
Taking a sip of the cup of caf she had poured for herself, Madieke presses on, "Autopsies of the victims provided the information you seem to be familiar with, the height and handedness of the killer, and the details about the lightsaber used. The only other pieces of evidence the killer left behind were some black fabric fibers believed to be from a garment believed to be a cloak. The fibers are common, so not of much value beyond matching some later findings that I'll get to in a minute. The killer had disabled the security cameras around and inside Sike's estate before making their attack, and was cautious enough to avoid most traffic and other cameras in the city while making their way to the estate. I say most because we do have an image that we believe is the killer recovered from an ATM camera. The image is of a cloaked and hooded individual that matches the height of the suspect determined by the forensic analysis of the scene and the coroners findings, but is also of limited use since the sex of the figure cannot be determined from the image. The height is not much help either, five foot five is a bit below average for most humanoid males, and a bit above average for females. Shrugging with a frown, Madieke says, The height does, however eliminate either Vyridian as a suspect. Wobbling her head from side to side, Madieke amends her last statement, Maybe anyway, since there is a remote possibility that the killer was a Force Phantom created and controlled by Vyridian." Madieke's skeptical tone when relaying the theory reveals that she puts almost no stock in it, and adds it merely for the sake of full disclosure.
After another sip of caf, Madieke resumes her briefing once more, "One other finding seems to put Andros Vyridian in the clear, biometric records from his office revealing that he was in his office at the government building at the time of the murders. As for the possibility the survivors mistook Atlantis for Andros, witnesses from the Mist Order confirm that Atlantis was at the academy at the time of the murders. Lifting a hand and rubbing her eyes, Madieke admits, In hindsight it was probably a mistake to involve Atlantis in the investigation given that his brother was falsely accused of the crimes, but I thought the insight he would be able to provide into Force users and their abilities outweighed the risk anyone would take the possibility he or his brother were involved serious enough that his contributions could be considered suspect. Shaking her head, Madieke goes on, Be that as it may, it was Atlantis that led us to the ATM cam that gave us the image of our suspect. Atlantis was able to use the Force, with the help of Mace Vos, to reconstruct the events outside Sike's estate by using the mists to . . . do something I'm sure you all understand better than I do, but it further confirmed the forensic and autopsy findings regarding the killer's physical attributes. Unfortunately, that limited description does not make identifying the killer any easier. One possibility that we are exploring is that the killer is off-world talent employed by a rival organized crime family to topple Sike's control of the majority of the criminal enterprise here on Umgul, and another is that members of his own organization did the same thing to assume his position. We, she walks to the table and pats the stack of file folders that contain the information from some of the residents of Umgul that had been looked into, also looked into the possibility an entirely new player might be responsible; looking closely at new residents to Umgul that fit certain parameters. None of them panned out, Madieke says, but we do have Sike's lieutenants and members of rival organizations under surveillance currently to see if we can confirm or eliminate the possibility of their involvement. We are also reaching out to other law enforcement agencies to see if they know of any Force sensitive mercenaries for hire matching our killer's description."
"As for possible motives for the assault, Madieke says, sitting on the edge of the table, Andros Vyridian is adamant that he knows of no one from his past or present lives that would go at him in such a fashion. Assuming he's right, our killer may have chosen to impersonate Vyridian for another reason entirely, distraction possibly, or maybe to make other criminal organizations keep their heads down for fear Vyridian is on a rampage. The press, Madieke scowls in distaste, has unfortunately played right into the killer's hands, assuming that distraction was the reason Andros was impersonated. Waving a hand to set that subject aside for the moment, Madieke says, And that is pretty much where we're at for the time being. This doesn't feel over, she adds with a frown, and even though I hate to admit it, we might not make much more progress until our killer makes another move and gives us more to go on. Finishing her caf and tossing the cup into a wastebin, Madieke asks, So, what questions do you all have so far?"

*Morgan's squeaked word hadn't gone unnoticed by either Calmcacil sibling, though as she did not continue that thought, the conversation had continued on. Aerandir noticed her seeming somewhat distressed before attempting to calm herself, mouthing words while blushing slightly... She had seemed upset at something Aerandir said, or perhaps didn't say? Perhaps he'd ask her later.
After Serrin briefly explained what little more she knows, she requested a full briefing. The Calmcacils listened, Aerandir taking out his datapad and opening his notes file on the case, tapping out the highlights and amending some areas, such as the name of the most important victim and his species now that it was before him, as well as the number of victims. The new information was incredibly enlightening and Aerandir continued tapping out notes, abridging many due to the sheer number and speed of the breakdown, and he didn't wish to hold up the ranger any further by asking her to slow down; his writing speed was efficient enough to keep cliffnotes.
More information came, including information that corroborated not only with the details Atlantis had told them, but speculation of his own. Aerandir nodded when she noted they would know more about how the ability Atlantis used to track the perpetrator worked, but it was a vague nod; yes, Aerandir could potentially piece together an explanation for the ability, but it was an ability he had not heard of before and had yet to fully understand. He also took note of her apparent interest in someone who could better understand and explain Force abilities; well, not that he needed to point that out, but the four of them were here for that now, so hopefully their expertise could come in handy in some ways.
Aerandir was starting to piece together a clearer picture now thanks to all the information, and a single glance told him that Michelle had done the same. He looked upon Morgan out of the corner of his eyes; she was sitting quietly, deep in thought, cheek slightly sunken in. Chewing on it, no doubt, as she often did when contemplating something. As the briefing concluded and Ranger Aninh opened the floor to questions, Aerandir brought a hand to his mouth and perused his notes again, humming contemplatively.
He felt Michelle's gaze upon him; when he looked at her, she seemed to be quietly asking for permission to proceed. He didn't think she needed the permission, but he nodded regardless. The blond twelve-year-old then looked at the ranger and asked,* "Does the Vice Governor have a political rival? I know he says he doesn't know anyone who would try to frame him like this, but it could be someone else who doesn't agree with him maybe..."
*Aerandir folded his hands in front of his mouth as he contemplated this. He could see the logic in a rival criminal organization ordering the attack, take out a notorious crime lord and put the remaining organizations in fear while they took over and dominated the market. But a political rival made plenty of sense as well... Many politicians were just as shady as criminals after all.
He'd also considered asking whether they had certainty that the assassin wasn't hired by Andros, but then why would an assassin pose as the Vice Governor he was working for? Not likely. That, and it seemed that, whatever her relationship with them, the ranger fully trusted the Vyridian brothers. It was good that, emotionally, they were on the side of the brothers. But now they had to find all the evidence to back it up physically as well...
Briefly he glanced at Morgan again, who was only listening intently, while Lokay the tailring seemed disinterested by the whole scenario, peeking this way and that and occasionally seeking affection from his owner. Aerandir was confident at some point in this discussion she would be able to confidently contribute, but not quite yet it seemed...*

Short answer. Long-game.
Madieke stands and walks to the stim-caf pot to pour herself another cup after Aerandir asks about the possibility that a political rival of the Vice Governor could be responsible for the murders, her expression suggesting that she is mulling the question over. It is not so much that Madieke is considering the question for the first time, since she had actually asked Andros the same question, so much as she is trying to think of a way to answer the question that will make sense to someone not familiar with Umgul's political set-up. After trying to think of an easy answer only to find that there is not one, Madieke decides to give a more detailed answer. "Short answer is no, Madieke begins. No one has criticized the Vice Governor in a public forum or the media, prior to the murders that is, and he has no rivals in the political arena. Rubbing the side of her face, Madieke says, You'll need a bit of a history lesson for that to make sense, so here goes. As you know, Umgul is not a member of the Republic or any other group; we're independent. So the titles of Vice Governor and Senator are a bit misleading. We don't have a democratic government, it's more of an autocracy. Raan Jade, or Senator Jade, with the help of the Mist Order restored order to an Umgul in crisis several years ago, and Jade has remained in a position of essentially absolute authority ever since he assumed responsibility for restoring the peace and rebuilding Umgul. Andros wasn't elected to his position, which is actually more accurately described as Raan's proxy than a vice governor, and since there is no party system, there really isn't an existing forum for a political rival to campaign. And since there haven't been any plans announced for elections any time soon, no real way for a rival to exist. I mean, obviously Umgul has a free press, so a rival could theoretically announce themselves that way, but like I said before, this has been the first hint of any kind of public discontent with the way things are since Jade assumed responsibility for Umgul's welfare."
Taking a sip of her stim-caf, Madieke frowns as she considers once again the odds that the whole mess is some kind of political power play, and shares her thoughts on the matter, "If the killings are part of a political power play, it's being made by someone playing a long game, someone who hasn't made their political ambitions known yet. Her right shoulder lifting in a shrug, Madieke says, Anyone throws their hat into the political ring any time soon will bear some close looking into, but until that happens, I think the OC element here on Umgul is what we need to be watching. Whether it is a power struggle between rival outfits or not, our killer will probably focus on similar targets to the first vic, either because it furthers their agenda, or in order to fan the media fire further. We may know Vyridian is innocent, but until we can prove that beyond a doubt the schutta in the press will smell blood in the water and probably keep screaming corruption and cover up because it sells."

Folding my hands together beneath my chin, I listen to Madieke's briefing attentively, arranging the facts in my mind as they are presented as though putting together a puzzle; a puzzle that, it soon becomes readily apparent, is missing quite a few pieces as yet. Madieke's briefing is thorough, or as thorough as possible given what has been learned, and I find myself agreeing with her implied conclusion that a clear course of investigation may not be possible until the unidentified perpetrator acts again; their next move ideally presenting us with other pieces of the puzzle to be added, and perhaps beginning to present a more complete picture of what the ultimate aim of the killings might be. I find myself in agreement with the strategy of watching the criminal organizations, as it seems highly likely they are either directly involved in what is happening or they are pawns or targets of the killer.
Aerandir's question is a good one, and Madieke's answer somewhat illuminating even though it, too, sheds no further light on the possible identity of the killer. As there is little that can be done about the press, I turn my attention towards endeavoring to acquire additional pieces to the puzzle, asking Madieke, "What can you tell us about Sike's organization, and of the other criminal organizations you mentioned? Are there any that were competing with Sike?" I ask, thinking that a struggle for control of criminal activity is a possible motive for the killings.

*As Ranger Aninh answered Michelle's question, Aerandir took more notes as she spoke. No political rivals, at least not outspoken ones? That was almost hard to believe, but as the ranger explained the political system of Umgul in more depth, as well as a brief history, it made a little more sense. Aerandir tsked at the unfortunate-but-true notion that media spun corruption stories because it sells and makes people talk, but otherwise had no other comments, musing on the words spoken so far.
Michelle herself only had a single comment, a soft, but audible, mutter.* "Someone wants to start an uprising then... but who?" *It was clear she was thinking aloud and not actually seeking a verbal answer, seeing as they had yet to label any suspects. They remained silent, seeing as Serrin had taken the opportunity to ask her own questions...*

*Lots of words. It wasn't like Morgan hadn't sat through long lectures or lessons before, but this briefing, it felt different somehow. The closest she could compare it to was when her daddy would take her on missions, but those were always straightforward, the game plan concise, not very wordy. Here... there was so much to take in and remember and piece together. And here, there wasn't even a clear objective! Well, other than to find out who was doing this. So not only were they here to take on a mission... they also had to figure that mission out first.
She was going to ask for her daddy's notes first thing when they were out of here...
Regardless, she didn't laze about and remained attentive, doing her best to soak in all the info and keep it in her mind. A lot of it Atlantis had talked about before, which was good. The rest... it was a lot. Michelle asked a question about political rivals, which led to even more in-depth explanation about the world's government, some of which she wasn't sure she understood. But Daddy was still taking notes, so she would have those to fall back on... She had a feeling she would have a lot of studying to do after this... Ugh. Homework.*
"Jedi," *she whispered softly, chiding herself. Again, she mouthed along with her thoughts,* "Control myself. We gotta do this stuff."
*Now if all of this was going down on Felucia, she'd know everything and would be able to jump right in! But now she had to learn a lot just to be competent in this investigation. But she knew it was going to be tough, and she'd practically demanded to be brought along, so she had to stop complaining and get used to it. So she'd sit, be attentive, and keep tabs of everything said... and review it later. She was here to be a help, not a hindrance.*

Realm. Relevant. Wrapping.
Catching the murmured supposition of Michelle, Madieke offers her a shrug of her shoulder even though the statement was obviously not intended to elicit a response; the young Jedi's hypothesis is certainly well within the realm of possibility, but Madieke is not yet inclined to bet the proverbial farm on inciting some kind of political upheaval being the motive for the killings as there are other possible motives for the killer having chosen to impersonate Andros Vyridian she is not yet willing to discount entirely.
Standing up as much to move around a bit as to point out the relevant holopics and reports tacked to the board, Madieke dives in to answering Master Roma's question. "Two main players top the small list of organizations with the resources and numbers to be potential candidates for the one directing the killer. First is a small outfit that operates out of Furgan. About twenty beings of predominantly human origin, led by a male Rodian named Orus Denive. Denive's outfit owns and operates five taverns and one run down hotel, and they they operate illegal gambling games ranging from high stakes sabacc to bookmaking on sports events throughout the galaxy. They're also involved in loansharking, but haven't gained much traction overall since the UPD has been onto them for some time now, and have raided several of their gambling dens or successfully prosecuted members proven to participate in the loansharking operation. Denive himself has been incarcerated multiple times, but it's believed he's recently found new venues for his operations that the UPD has not uncovered."
"Next up is an organization believe to operate out of the city center. Lot less known about them. What is widely suspected in the UPD and other law enforcement agencies is that the organization is led by a Hutt named Strilath. Strilath owns a high end nightclub catering to the wealthy, several hotels ranging from luxurious to more low end, and upward from eight restaurants. UPD's OC unit suspects that the business holdings of Strilath are involved in the smuggling and narcotics trade attributed to the organization, but have yet to prove any allegations. Wrapping up, Madieke says, We have eyes on Strilath's club, and on Denive in case they make any moves suggesting their involvement in the killings."

Mulling over what Madieke tells us of the other figures included among Umgul's unsavory criminal element, I do not feel as though any other pieces of the puzzle have definitively revealed themselves so much as though possible pieces have bet tossed on the proverbial table to be turned this way and that in an effort to learn whether or not they are a part of the puzzle or mere distracting elements. If nothing else, Madieke's briefing has convinced me that the investigators seem to have done all that they can for now with what has been learned from the killer's actions.
There is only one possible angle I feel might have been overlooked, or so it seems, and so I ask, "Have you considered that Andros, or his brother, might be the true target or targets? The choice to impersonate Andros may have been an attempt to draw him, or his brother, out, or to besmirch their reputations, perhaps even both. While I have little doubt that Andros and Atlantis believe that they are perfectly capable of protecting themselves and those close to them, I also know that overconfidence has been the end of many that thought the same, and so I ask, Have you considered that it might be worthwhile to have some kind of protective surveillance over the Vyridians and those close to them? It could prove unnecessary, I admit, but if the killer is ultimately intent on harming the twins, he or she might also move next against the twins directly or through those close to them."

Already know. Fitting in.
"We've considered those angles, Madieke answers Master Roma's question, reaching up to rub her temple as she pauses before continuing. Trying to keep from sounding as cynical as she feels, Madieke says, Not that your idea is a bad one, Master, but I can all but guarantee the Vyridians wouldn't agree to having any kind of detail assigned to them, protective or otherwise. Madieke doesn't imagine that she is telling any of the Jedi anything they don't already know if she is right in thinking that they are close enough to the Vyridians to know them reasonably well, but she explains anyway, The brothers are both exceedingly private individuals, for one thing, and I don't think they would entertain the notion of putting anyone in harm's way for their sakes either. As for their friends and family, I have no doubt that Andros and Atlantis have already taken steps to make sure they're well protected. Shrugging her shoulders, Madieke says without any conviction since Atlantis has given her the impression that the only opinions he gives a damn about are his own, All that being said, you think it would be worthwhile to float the idea by them, be my guest. Might at least listen if it comes from you."
Resisting the urge to glance at the chrono on the wall, Madieke, curious as to what degree of team work she can expect from these Jedi after seeing how Atlantis and Mace operate, asks, "Any other questions I can answer, or should we move on to where you all see yourselves fitting into the investigation?"

*Aerandir continued the note-taking, writing down the small description of the Furgan outfit and the Rodian's name, with a "check spelling" tag beside it along with the other names he had written down whose spelling he wasn't entirely sure on. He made note that the second organization was less known, as well as putting down what other information was known, of course. As to be expected, this only left more questions, more possibilities... As he was sure the police had already done, they would have to start with the most likely scenario. Couldn't hurt to ask what theirs was, if they were to cooperate...
Serrin suggested setting up protection for the Vyridian brothers and those close to them, that the killer may have been after them as the true targets and trying to draw them into the open. This possibility Aerandir had not considered, and it was a good one as well...
Waiting for Ranger Aninh to give her response to Serrin, Aerandir remained quiet until asked if they had more questions.* "Just one, to better put us on the same page, then I'll be satisfied," *he began.* "What's the most likely theory being pursued right now?"

Chalk. Safe bet.
Madieke drums her fingers on the edge of the table, taking her time to consider how to answer Master Calmcacil's question rather than blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. If not for the fact that the killer chose to impersonate the Vice Governor, Madieke would find it easy to chalk the killings up to a power play on the part of a rival criminal organization, or even to an inter-organizational vie for the top dog position. A political angle seems somewhat far fetched, however, given that choosing targets more directly tied to that world would make infinitely more sense; though the possibility exists that the killer's next targets might just be more directly tied to politics. Rather than try to sound as though she has a clear picture of what is going on, Madieke chooses to admit, "Not sure I'd call it the most likely scenario, but we're focusing on the organized crime angle for the time being. Target was arguably the top of the criminal food chain here on Umgul, and it's other criminals that stand to gain the most. Sike had the means to import drugs and other illegal items onto Umgul. UPD has yet to figure out how. Killer could have spent the extra time with Sike getting him to reveal his methods, could be the motive. Lifting a hand, waving it towards the board behind her, Madieke suggests, Whole Vyridian angle might be a sideshow, a distraction. With a shrug of her shoulders, Madieke adds, Or an attempt to make other criminal organizations keep their heads down while whoever hired the killer makes their play."
Sounding more sure of her reasoning, Madieke says, "Whatever the real motive, seems like a safe bet that organized crime is an integral part of whatever the end game is. We keep our eyes on the O.C. players, we'll be in place when the killer makes the next move. Almost but not quite smiling, her eyes narrowing predatorily, Madieke concludes in a determined tone, We catch the killer, find out who's pulling their strings and round 'em up, won't matter what the big plan was."
