So, there has been a lot of meme's about this over the years, and a lot more discussion about this topic of late thanks to Rebels and theories about The Last Jedi. I know it's a controversial topic here, given our history of JvS Gray Jedi. But I still want to have a decent conversation on the topic, because I feel like a lot of people have massive misconceptions about what a proper Gray Jedi is, and really what the Jedi are.
My biggest issue, comes from the idea that you are either a Jedi or you're not. I don't honestly feel like that is a true statement. I mean, coming from a Jedi in universe, sure I could believe it. Because after all, the Jedi Order is a Monastic Order. As in, it's a religious Order, that has a set of beliefs on how they view the force.
It'd be like one denomination of a religion saying that you're of that denomination or you don't exist.
But that's not technically true. A proper and true Gray Jedi is merely a different interpretation of the same base set of beliefs. Yes, in the Star Wars universe, certain actions can affect how you use the force. But just because you don't 100% agree with every Jedi commandment, Should not preclude you from still being considered a Gray Jedi.
A Gray Jedi is not someone who has a grab bag of powers available from both extremes of the dark side and light side. That I do not agree with. In fact, I disagree with the idea that you can switch your Force alignment in a fight.
But what I can believe, is that you can still use different light side powers without being a fully committed and devout Jedi.
I could understand someone not being a Jedi or Gray Jedi if their core beliefs of the Force greatly differed. But that's not what a lot of Gray Jedi are about in canon.
For those wondering, yes I disagree with Pablo Hidalgo's statement. It's not a binary thing. The Force is a complex beast, and there is a multitude of faiths within Star Wars that view it differently. It just happens that the Jedi and Sith were just the two most prevailing schools of thought and pretty much wiped out or suppressed any other group that differed from their opinions.
Please feel free to comment, refute, add your own opinions. But I do ask that you do so responsibly and respectfully. Open debate is more than welcome. But if things get out of control, I will ask this thread be archived.
