Red watched Di sashay across the busy space. He tried to keep a cool face as Di sat but his palms were sweating. At the question he spit his coffee all over the desk. Eyes all but begging he whispered, painfully aware and equally sickened of the pretension of the question -Red- "What are you doing here?"

Di looked at Red like he had been slapped across the face with a white lace glove full of ball bearings. But this held on but a few seconds. Regaining his cool Di retorted -Di- "Are you the same junkie that has given all that he hasn't burned to the poor, quit his cushy job and now plans to venture off to run nude through the forest eating only the fruit that falls freely to the ground as you search for spiritual awareness?" A sudden flashback struck Di. He is mired down in swampland under shelling, in a fruitless war against an invisible guerrilla army. Some things bond men like nothing else, war being one of these things. He sat in the muck back to another man. Bodies of brothers in arms lie scattered all around them the smell of death hanging in the air. The man now sat across the desk from him. The shrapnel hit him and he scarcely felt it at first, hand coming up from the irritating pressure on his side covered in blood. Head racing he began to black in and out of consciousness, feeling as if he were being lifted up into the air. He thought: Am I dying? Muttering he said: “Just take me.” The answer was swift. “Shut the f%$k up, you ain’t dying.” He looked at Red across from him and muttering again
Di

Red too was locked in memories of his time in the military. Close Protection of a refugee shelter. None could leave. If they did standing orders were to shoot; anything would be better than what awaited them beyond. Some could not grasp that fact; some had to be shot. You could tell yourself that a thousand times but it still didn’t feel right. One side of the civil conflict was for the inmates of the camp but they were deep within the territory controlled by the side that would gut these people like fish. Not a single person was taken from them by the opposing side. A man who served with him there was with him now. He heard Di and thanks hardly being what one would offer for what was going down at the moment asked -Red- “What?”

The response was swift and short -Di- “Grab your gear – we’re outta here.” Di stood and walked out

Red snatched up his personal effects, shoving a rifle into a long bag of clothes. He rifled through his desk snatching a few other artifacts of note. The office stripped bare of anything that he wanted and he followed
