Friends, Many in the JvS community have commented over the years that there is no one place to see a summary of all the major in-character events currently taking place in the galaxy. We are going to change that, by giving everyone the chance to promote their activities through the IC HoloNet News. My proposal is to launch a simplified, more self-service version of the HoloNet News. Rather than all the news being collected and written specifically by HNN staff, the HNN staff will create a thread for each month's news, and then one / a few representatives of each faction/writing group/etc would be authorized to post news from their current events and storylines for the month. Anyone could sign up to contribute to the news, but there will be an approval process and some basic ground rules (e.g. how often you are allowed to post) so that everyone gets an fair voice in the HoloNet News. However, this cannot happen without your commitment to provide content, so please let us know if this is something you would find useful, and to which you would be willing to help contribute. If you're interested in helping, please 1) post here and 2) let The HNN know. If there is enough interest, the HNN will be re-opened! Many thanks to those who helped suggest to this idea. In addition, it feels kind of elitist to say "you can sign up to join... but the work you put time into may not be chosen for publication. Oh, no, that's not what I intend at all. This is much simpler than the meaning you are reading into it. Once you're in, you're in. If you're accepted as a contributor, you will have free reign to post whatever you want. The only limits will be guidelines that will be provided in advance, before you write anything, and the sole purpose of those limits is to avoid spamming the board with constant updates from a single source that drown out all other contributors. I don't want to complicate this by having an editorial process, I don't think it's necessary. |

he wouldn't be speaking for any faction. Really what we are looking for is updates from all the major (or minor) storylines currently going down on the site. If you have OOC visibility into what's happening IC, that's what matters. I don't care what character you use to actually provide your IC reports. That's a pretty trivial part of the whole process. The point of this is to solicit the OOC participants of significant storylines to self-report on them to bring publicity and new opportunities for interconnections of galactic events. |

I think Chill has this pretty well covered. As was pointed out in the opening post, the approval process and guidelines will be relatively minimal outside of making sure people aren't spamming updates every couple days, or making reports that are illegible to read because of like spelling errors or ridiculously bright formatting that blinds people. As explained in the thread that was linked to, basically the HNN will be the medium through which the communications are made, and each faction/group/etc will maintain creative control over what they put out.
The point of this idea is to centralize the information on what SLs are going on around the universe so people know what is happening and can have a nice in for if they want to join in and dont really know how to do so otherwise. To this end, we will need to make sure there isnt anything that crosses the line (as I think we can all agree is inevitable at some point) and make sure people doing the right thing aren't negatively affected. Ideally, everything will get a defacto approval and it'll be low maintenance so long as everyone does the right thing and any interference from myself or the editorial staff will be minimal.
Speaking of, we will be looking for volunteers for that if this gets enough support, work load will be minimal, only real requirement is that you check in occasionally on reports and have enough of a handle on the English language that you can help point out any errors with spelling or grammar, so yeah, just something for people who are into that kind of work to think about for the future.

I do encourage people to show their support for this idea, if they are interested in seeing this come to fruition. I think the rewards as far as keeping writers (both old and new) informed would be extremely beneficial. It would provide exposure for SLs and locations that could do with a boost. It would allow people to see where they could go, or what they could read. On top of that, it provides a place not only for OOC explanations, but for people to have some IC fun with news reports (and I know there is a few people around JvS who can write some good propoganda).
But remember, without support, this will go no where. It is not something that can, or will, be forced upon JvS, for the sole fact that the work load is beyond a single person or even a small handful of people. It needs a team of volunteers from various walks of life on JvS who are willing to put in the time to summarise what is going on around the place.

At any rate. Although this idea had initially been shelved, because we had little interest, things are back on at the moment. Monthly threads are going, and so far we've been going along pretty fine. Anyone wanting to join the team and post up news articles is encouraged to PM myself or @prarrebeccaelios (or both together, just so the message is seen).
