As far as pregnant silences go, this one was allowed to go to full term, and if something didn't break soon, they were going to have to go in for a C-section.
"..."
Dresden had no idea how to proceed from here. Should he say something? Wait until the Major spoke? Do the hokey pokey? Jesus Fucking Christ on a Most Holy Pogo Stick.
"So..."

Thankfully, he was the one to start cracking the silence, because Force knows she would just start cracking or cackling or frothing or shooting. All of it seemed good right about now. Irony is such a terrible mistress, because had she kept her mittens at her sides instead of cracking his bones they could have been engaging in something a little different. Nothing overt or too flashy, of course. It just that there was nothing she'd find more agreeable then to hold and be held in a gentle noose by his arms, because they would be warm, because she thinks she is not all okay, because she wanted to show appreciation for his patience throughout this mess, because she'd rather be feeling his lips pushing against her neck, because it would be better to feel his heated breath, and the power it came from -but those lips were framed by her violence, broken, chapped, and bloodied.
Looking up now from the completed exchange of parts, her expression is one of a bittersweet mixture.
"Ja. Do zyou dink vwe shouldt go non-lethal dis roundt?"

The former Shard pushed his vertigo to the side through sheer force of Whill (teehee) and stood. It took a little doing, but he was able to wrap his one good arm around the Major, despite the sharp jabs of pain cause by her holster digging into his damaged ribs.
"Sounds like a plan to me," he said gently. "Let's save that shit for the bastards that'll come knocking on our door, eh?"

Curious: she was actually referencing the coming bounty hunters, not exactly stating a euphemism for their own explosive relationship and the amount of collateral damage caused. Considering their combined prowess, it might be over compensation to murder in self defense, like tigers expected to a fight a wave of deer. Then again, there was something so exciting about the prospect of challenging combat; exciting was something of an understatement. It was a tingle, an internal freeze that motivates, and it may even have to do with the smell coming off of that arm resting in reassurance.
"So zyour sumdink of dis "craddle robber," ja? I am not even half of Koko's age." Call it a subject change sans grace.

Dresden chuckled.
"You could be an old crone of 800 years and I'd still be a cradle robber. I got into a fistfight with Revan at a bar once."
It was up to the Major to figure out if he was joking on that point. The former Shard suspected it might have been true, but his memories of that century were a little hazy.
"If you want to get technical, this body is only about 25 years old. Legally, that puts us somewhere around the same age."

Revan? Who was Revan? Another Iron Knight? Her head almost spun: this universe was confuddled and vexing enough with one Shard Whill, nevermind another. Then again, this being could have been someone of importance. She certainly didn't know. Probably some Jedi or Sith character who died after tearing up a few planets. In fact, wasn't there a bird from her homeworld that bore a semblance in that name? No matter, it wasn't important. Pensive now, the Fallanassi levels another question.
"About dat: ist dat body ein clone, taken from ein 'volunteer,' or did dey flash grow? Do zyou hafe vworkingk reproductive fluids, unt, unt..." It appears that at this point the markswoman suddenly becomes wrapped up in some kind of mental math, looking up towards the ceiling with the ridiculous strands of her hair bouncing as that head bobbed left and right.

Dresden say down on the bed, dizzy for reasons that had nothing to do with the blows to the head. Reproductive...don't ask a question you don't want an answer to.
"The body isn't a clone. About twenty some odd years ago, we picked up a geneticist, brilliant woman, but utterly mad. You'd have gotten along well with her. Anyway, she was determined to create the 'perfect human.' Used a retrovirus to rewrite the genetic code of her own eggs as a teenager. She actually had a child the natural way about the same time this body was created as a control, to see which was superior. Her husband kidnapped the other kid and ran off once he found out what she had in mind. She went looking for the boy and he gunned her down. Can't say I blame him. This was supposed to be a test purely of the physical; she chemically wiped the mind of anything resembling a personality. The boy was rescued in time, but this body wasn't. No mind to speak of. When she died, we found the body in the lab, completely vegetative. The brain could have worked, but with the OS wiped clean, there was no way to really to give the body a chance at a life, so it was brought in and cared for as a backup in case my body was destroyed. If I had known, I probably wouldn't have signed off on the project, but no one asked me. Flash forward to a few months back, and I wake up with my soul in a fully functioning, genetically augmented body. The whole thing operates at something like thirty percent above baseline in terms of musculature and neural efficiency, and according to the gene spooks, the changes will breed true. They were about beside themselves when I refused to let them take a sample of the, um, reproductive fluids."

"Dat literally does not answer mein question. How does vone transfer essence from vone body to another? zYou did not have ein genome like eine human. How couldt dese dinks be? From ein evolutionary shtandtpoint, it ist ein complete marvel: ein means to render even gotts in ein tangible body. zYour current shtate ist not of zyour choice, ja? Imagine it: if zyou can be trappedt into a shtate of mortality, any beingk can also be ensnaredt in such ein vway. vWhat ein curious unt long vwinded vweapon zyour tormentors hafe createdt. Unt on top of dis, zyour shtill have reproductive capability. . . . . . It ist almost like ein prolongedt death sentence."
Something like a smile twists from the corners of her long lips.
"But dey did not count on me joiningk zyou in dis vway, did dey? Unt now, vonce zyou're healedt, dey vwill die like dehr shtupidt, shortsighted pups dey truly are.

"Your guess is as good as mine on that," he said thoughtfully. "They tried to explain it, something about metaspiritual transference or some such crap, but I had just gotten back to the world."
Dresden left out the bit where a loss of control on his part wrecked the lab and destroyed the equipment and personnel in charge of the transfer.
"Still, we've known it was possible to transfer one's soul to a new body for centuries. Sith were apparently quite good at it."

"Sith? Bah. Magic? Deir methods never kommt vwithout some haphazardt cost. Science vwill unt hast foundt ein better vway. Dehr problem hier ist dat zyou are repressingk, or are ashamedt of somedink vwhich took place duringk zyour transfer. Perhaps ein traumatic accident? It ist not relevant at dee moment. Perchance, do zyou recall vwhere dis laboratory ist? It vwould much more easy to determine ein treatment course if vwe knew vwhether occultism or science vwas used to remake zyou -or even both!"
Pushing inwards ever so slightly, she attempts to see what sort of exposition he could offer; compulsively testing someone with a broken nose always seemed like genius when it was instinctive, but it often reeked of bitter herbs in hindsight when something went wrong. In this case, it wasn't coming from a place of callousness or malice; this merely came from scientific curiosity.

If the line of questioning offended Dresden, he didn't let it show.
"Less a matter of suppression than retention. Brain had to learn to store memories from scratch, took a little getting used to. As far as the location of the lab, it used to be on Dressel. As I understand it, the equipment was destroyed and the lab was filled with ferrocrete."
Technically true, though the former Shard had his doubts about whether or not the equipment was truly destroyed. But that was a line if questioning he didn't want to pursue, because there were things on that inventory sheet that he never wanted anyone to get their hands on.
"Out of curiosity, I don't suppose you've got one of your magic bullets on hand, do you? Might go a long way towards evening the odds."

So Dresden apparently thought himself as some expert subject changer. He did have the decency to ask a rather direct question regarding their survival. Still, she wanted to say something along the lines of, 'You can trust me.' Or more like, 'Yeah, I know I have tried to slice out your guts before with secrets but there is no more further need to hide them.' Yes, the Major was sure such statements were just the thing to build more trust between them and not at all intrusive or seemingly cloak and dagger. But back to the bullet: she had swaped out firing mechanisms for a reason, and that reason was that she simply could not find any of the 'magic' bullets. Even now, she re-patted her pockets and rummaged through her pants rear end pouches, but there was nothing. Well, nothing that was a round and powder, in any case.
"Dose vwouldt be perfect fuer dehr current situation, but nein. Koko left me none . . . I dink."
But there was a single ball hidden somewhere on her person, and until she noticed that the backside of her hair was slumped far more than usual, as if carrying more weight than it was used to, such ignorance would remain uncorrected.

"That doesn't seem right," Dresden said, his brow furrowed in thought. "Koko is up to something, but whatever else might be going on, she didn't leave us here to die. There's got to be one somewhere, and knowing Koko, it's hidden someplace she'd find funny."

Koko may have not arranged this couple's retreat deep in the woods to have them die ingloriously, but it was possible that the arms dealer foresaw those hellish as undermining the urgency of this mission. Such prudence was not foolish, considering some of the soldiers, the oldest vets, boasted of once seeing a single shot demolish a hovertank column. Cloaked in mystery due to a lack of survivors, it was unknown exactly how much the musket ball could handle -and from the Fallanassi's stand point such ability would not be on display today.
"It ist better dis vway, anyway. Vwe'll hafe to vwatch out für each other more; it vwill be far more intimate like so."

"Suit yourself. I've never fought with a magic bullet on my side before, I reckon it's not gonna kill me to go without today."
Dresden wasn't lucky enough to have holsters on hand for his weapons. Fortunately, his belt had a built in slot for a holster that almost, but not quite, held the .500 comfortably. The grip jabbed uncomfortably into his side, but it was a damned sight more comfortable that lugging the heavy revolver around all day. He wasn't anywhere near stupid enough try try to tuck the LeMat into his waistband; it was left lying on the bed for the moment as the former Shard walked over to the box of rations and started rummaging around.
"Between you and me, if it's not in your pockets, she's either got it tucked into that hair of yours or somewhere a bit more intimate. I wouldn't mind helping out with the search in the slightest, but that's on you."
At random, he pulled a case off the stack and brought it over to the bed. There were 18 meals inside, each a self contained little slice of nutritional hell. The meals were designed to provide enough calories to keep a person alive in survival situations, and while they excelled in that, it was highly recommended that they not be consumed for more than a few weeks at a time. Most of the shelters like this had their own stash of other goods to be used in conjunction with the emergency rations as a result. But, Dresden figured, if this wasn't an emergency, he didn't know what was, and pulled a meal out of the care. Chicken pesto pasta.
"I doubt she hid it anywhere requiring a cavity search to get to, but pretty much anything else is fair game. Care for a meal?"

Tactical expertise manifested itself in spades for this woman. Tact itself did not. Both aspects were not above being mutually exclusive, nor was one a prerequisite for another. Now displayed as an example of this fact for the Shard in a borrowed body. The Fallanassi rechecks her person, peering down her chest after pulling a gap in the combat vest, to patting down her lanky ass. Nothing. She even slid her hands between her thighs and underneath her socks; still, nothing. She was pretty sure she would able to feel a 50 millimeter ball if it was "tucked" up anything more intimate, so that was automatically ruled out.
"???"She shrugs, ignoring the food packet offered to her momentarily. Immediately after, the Major offers the back of her head to Dresden.
"zYou take vone handtful, I take dehr other, ja?"

Dresden shrugged with his good shoulder. Expecting her to pick up on the hint was wishful thinking in the extreme. Despite their tendency to chide each other over their lack of romantic experience, neither of them had any room to talk. They could handle themselves alright given time to think and an idea of what was coming, but try to catch them by surprise and cue the gong show.
The former Shard started his search at the source, gently massaging her scalp while he was at it. He was able to enlist the help of his bad arm by virtue of being damned sure only to move it at the elbow. Before long, most of his half of the hair had been cleared, save for a ferociously tangled knot about six inches from her head that he had earmarked for closer investigations.
"I think I might have something."

"Don't pull!" Curious now, our resident sniper takes up his discovery, cupping his hands into hers in one motion, now inspecting some of the blisters and patches of dry skin. That isn't to say his hands were disgusting, it was simply that she was fascinated to reveal imperfections on his person.
"Oh. Ist she sehrious?" Now holding up the entire collection of flesh, bone, knuckles, and hair up just underneath her nose. Being farsighted, and excessively so at that, made it an impossibility for the Huntress to confidently make out objects or details at any range under a meter. The triangular pouch contained everything needed for a single shot, it was pretty much secure in knots. Removing it painlessly would probably be a bitch, to put it lightly.
"zYour 'daughter' relentlessly pushes dehr battle lines, Dresden. Dere vwill be payment fuer dis."

"You can say that again."
Dresden, who wasn't visually impaired, could see right away that the bag had been secured in such a way that removing it without removing hair would be nearly impossible. That wouldn't ordinarily be a problem, but the Major's hair went down almost to her knees. She was clearly quite attached to the stuff, and removal of the bag would take out a rather large chunk.
"Shit. The only way to get this thing out is to take some hair with it,"

"Nein. Ich vwouldt rather peel off pieces of Koko's skin." Our Markswoman looks upwards as if making the notion on a 'to do' list. "vWhich might come to pass."
There was no crushing need to let go of his hands just yet. Besides, sentimentality was still running rampant due to the recent abuse. "Unt zyou're hier, ja? Ein single bullet couldt not top dis -vwell, maybe."
