Dak sighed softly, shaking his head slowly at Xeres' retreating back. Watching the young man hide in his bunk, Dak frowned, then glanced away. 'Was it always like this?' he wondered. 'Were there always people left behind?' Dak had joined the Jedi because above all else he didn't want others to suffer like he had, cast out because of what they were. Having grown up on a colony of mostly Humans, he young Yuzzem had faced many challenges growing up, and he wished to protect others from similar fates. Shifting slightly where he sat on the edge of his bunk, Dak winced and touched his ribs, where the student Rekan had hit him several times. Bruised, no doubt, but not broken, they were a potent reminder to Dak that his physical advantages would fast evaporate without the touch of the Force. Dak sighed and shook his head again, then glanced around. Spotting a Gand student he had seen several times before, Dak offered him a friendly wave.

Vuur'l waved a triple-digited hand back at Dak. The Yuzzem was much taller than the Gand, but that didn't stop the knobbly alien from walking over and sitting on the bunk next to him.
"Vuur'l wonders why it is that Dak sighs?" squeaked and clicked from somewhere beneath the respirator apparatus that masked the lower half of the Gand's face. Large eyes blinked once, as the shorter alien hopped further onto the bunk and left his legs dangling over the edge.
The Gand knew that something was bothering the much larger humanoid, but it was not exactly apparent yet what that was.

Dak carefully ran clawed fingers through the fur on his head, thinking how he should word his response. There were many ways to say a thing about another being, but only a few that would not give insult to the one being talked about. Dak lowered his voice slightly when he spoke. The deep rumble, should he speak loudly, would often bother other students, especially those with hearing beyond human normal ranges.
"I know what it is like to not fit in somewhere. I grew up on a planet where most beings weren't much taller than you, and I had to try to it in at this size."
Dak gestured at himself. The Academy was one of the best places Dak had ever been, where his size was the least concern, but he still occasionally would hurt himself or cause an accident when moving about due to his size.
"We have been learning a variety of things since we have arrived here, but most o our time has been spent providing the basis of our more physical training. Certain friends of mine are not so strong, and I fear that they feel like they're being left behind, that they don't really belong because they can't keep up with the rest of us."

Large dark orbs considered Dak for some time in silence, before a series of squeak-clicks emerged from the Gand's vocoder apparatus.
"Vuur'l thinks having a big friend like Dak is advantageous," the Gand replied, absolutely unaware of any way that his words could be construed in an insulting fashion. Whereas a tall person would be more likely to need a small friend, a small person would have more advantages in having a tall friend. This was the Gand's point of view in this matter.
In reply to the other problem, the Gand thought a bit.
"Jedi concerned with helping other people. Vuur'l thinks others should focus on training selves than worrying about others. Jedi is more than pride or vanity. Dak should be strong as possible to help friends."
The Gand's triple-digited hands were tapping finger tips together, emphasizing the thoughts he was trying to convey.

"A lifetime of being a misfit, I guess in an odd way we are all misfits together so in that sense we all fit in."
Dak spoke, his tone serious and a little grim. His thoughts turned upon the Yuzzem; seriously? Size, that was the creatures biggest problem, how he envied that. If only Dak had lived the hardships he had, hell was too nice of a word, rape, murder, death all common to him. Where Xeres had come from you slept with one eye open and one hand on the nearest weapon, be it glass shard, syringe, what ever you could find. A cold dark and desolate existence where one didn't know when ones next meal might come and that meal might be your last. Where a poor excuse of a Father beat you because he felt like it, where everyone's lives became trapped and enslaved to drink and drugs. Where you would sell yourself for a crust of bread. Life was cruel, life was unfair, life was unjust and he some being with apparent mystical powers could prevent none of it. One day that would change, one day he would return and right those wrongs.
Xeres shook his head.
"You wouldn't be so quick to help what you may call friends if you'd lived knowing that friend would kill you for a crumb. Survival, now this is just a different kind, that's all it boils down to isn't it? Live in a place where you only have your self to rely on, live in a place where helping another means death or a brutal beating and then tell me you should be strong for others."
A dark mood indeed haunted him, but behind the varnish Xeres could not forget and now unfairness, the wood beneath the varnish was showing through.

Hesper Calix seemed to grin at the tiny Kushiban as he made his first request for food.
=Hesper Calix= "I don't know the answer to that one, Little One, but I sense that there are others in the dormatories. Yes, other younglings and padawans that call this Temple home. Why don't you find one of them and ask."
She pointed towards the door then came over to him and knelt down.
"Do not fear speaking to them, Little One. You must learn to tell others what you need, they will help you. Do not worry."
Before he could really say anything, she shoved him out the door, and in the direction of the other voices. Hesper knew that this was difficult for the child, but taking a few steps forward on his own would -hopefully- brighten his spirits. She began to mentally formulate his next lesson in her mind: This one was on himself and the world around him.

Dak nodded slowly, thinking on the words. His eyelids drooped slowly, and his head sunk towards his chest, then jerked upright again. He shook his head slightly, then blinked at the Gand.
"Apologies, friend. Thank you for your words, but I think it best that I get some sleep now. It has been a long day, and tomorrow will not be easy."
After making the proper goodbyes to Vuur'l, and waiting for the Gand o move an acceptable distance away at his own pace, Dak rolled over into his bed. His eyes were closed, and and he was asleep by the time his head hit the pillow.

Xeres looked slightly embarrassed about his sudden passionate outburst he made a hurried blurted apology and rolled over to face the wall his eyes searching out and tracing each crack and blemish for sleep would not come for his head was too full with the noise and hurt of those dark thoughts and happenings that replayed in his mind.
When sleep did come it was fitful and twice he awoke in a cold sweat, once using the pillow to stifle a cry so as not to wake his room mates, tomorrow would be a telling day and Xeres would be doubly tired.

Tantin walked around in a tight circle, looking at the door for a moment before he turned around back to Hesper.
"I...uhm...don't really think-"
Before Tantin could continue his objection to leaving the safety of the room, he was pushed out the door. He turned to look at the shut door, and pawed it a few times before hearing a few footsteps somewhere further down the hall. Turning his head quickly, his eyes scanned the walls, wide with a tinge of fear.
"He-hello?"
Tantin's fur turned to a dark gray and he began to quietly move down the hall.

The Gand's large eyes blinked several times rapidly, the only indication of the alien's surprise. But, it seemed the other two padawan's were tired and in need of sleep. Vuur'l retreated to his bunk and sat there for a bit, swinging his legs while thinking. Finally, he laid down and decided to sleep.
Hallway
The serene aura of the Academy's resident chief healer, Nalatua'lin, grew closer as the tiny Kushiban ventured down the hall towards the voices he'd heard earlier. Rounding the corner she spotted the young being, dark grey fur reflecting his fear of the unknown, and she tucked her datapad under one arm before dropping to her knees in front of him.
"Hello there," Nala smiled at him, tchunn draped down her back and tchinn curled around her shoulder. "Are you lost?"

Tantin froze when he spotted someone further down the hallway, coming closer to him. Maybe if he blended in well enough, they wouldn't see him? Still, the fear of meeting a stranger made his fur stay the gray, and he would not be fooling anyone. His fur changed in places from blue to pink to even orange as he spoke, looking down at the ground shyly.
"I'm n-new here. I don't really know my way ar-around."
Trying to not seem as scared, Tantin focused, and slowly his fur went back to the natural white, except for his paws and the tip of his tail, which remained slightly gray.

"I am Nalatua'lin," she introduced herself calmly, trying not to smile as his fur changed colors multiple times before mostly settling into white.
"No worries, little Kushiban, what are you trying to find?"
Frankly, she wanted to pick up the small being and carry him, but simply doing so would have been rude, and she didn't know whether asking would be offensive or not.

Tantin backed up a bit, to angle his head a bit easier to look up at Nalatua'lin. As he spoke his eyes seemed to grow wider. This was a trick of the eye, as a Kushiban's eyes were already so large. He spoke a bit apprehensively, still being shy.
"I'm Tantin..."
Tantin looked back in the direction of Hesper and his rooms, uncomfortably thinking of returning. He put down this thought, knowing she would be disappointed if he did not at least try and meet new people.
"Master Calix said I should try and meet new people in the Temple. I was hoping to find something to eat though..."
As if on cue Tantin's stomach growled, and he made an embarrassed face.

"You've nothing to be embarrassed about, Tantin," the green Twi'Lek smiled in a friendly fashion to ease the vague feeling of uncertainty emanating from the young, fluffy alien and simply reached out to scoop him up in her arms gently. Tchunn brushed his long ears and shivered before draping itself around him. Nalatua'lin straightened back up and winked at Tantin conspiratorially. "I'm hungry too, so let's go find some food."
She thought perhaps her name might be a bit tricky to pronounce, so she added, "you can call me 'Nala' if you like," as a gesture of trust. Twi'Leks did not shorten names as a general rule, since doing so as well as placing the emphasis differently conveyed varying levels of insult.

Tantin exhaled a bit bit as Nala picked him up. She was nice, and this Temple did not appear to have any Sith waiting around any corners, so he let himself relax a little bit. He still didn't understand why he couldn't seem to walk anywhere without someone wanting to carry him, but he didn't entirely mind.
"How long have you been here, at this Temple?"
Tantin was young, but clever. He was opening up conversation to try and nose around into other subjects, such as attacks and invasion on the planet. He was by no means a coward, but being so young, and already having lived through a ship wreck and a Sith attack had made him more aware of such things.
"What's it like to train here? I saw other children playing earlier. What I read about Jedi, I can't believe there would be time to play in between studies."

"Some years," she replied with a quiet laugh, "perhaps a decade by now? I have not thought about it in some time." They were heading towards the common mess hall by now in search of food. The Twi'Lek wondered what Kushiban ate. She knew there were records of at least one Kushiban Jedi Master deep in the archives, but she had never met one before and her knowledge on their eating habits was perforce limited. She would have guessed something leafy if pressed though.
The empathic Healer sensed something a bit off in Tantin, perhaps in the tentative quivering of his nose, or the way his large eyes peered around corners as if trying to see everywhere all at once, or maybe it was in the flicks of gray that still covered his paws in what looked like a sock pattern. It nearly made her quiet fierce, and this unsettled her. She hoped he would not sense the feeling in her, or see the clouds that flashed through her grey eyes as if there was a storm brewing. She hoped she wasn't holding him too tight. Her lek-tip twitched against his left ear, brushing it lightly.
"I wonder what has happened to you....little Kushiban," she whispered, half to herself, before blinking and answering his question.
"Some think that the Corellian academy is a bit sheltered, and I suppose in some ways it is. We try to provide a safe environment in which students may learn, but we also know that the universe out there is not going to be so friendly. You will have some time to play, but I think you'll find that students are encouraged to 'play' in ways that strengthen their learning of the day. Hopefully this provides them with more applications of our teachings and an ability to think creatively when it comes to problem solving." The ability to adapt swiftly to changing circumstances could mean the difference between life and death ultimately.
Nalatua'lin nodded in agreement, "Perhaps those of us who are older attempt to provide some of the childhood joys we ourselves did not experience."

Tantin sighed a bit and squirmed to get a bit more comfortable in Nala's arms. He craned his head to look forward more, his eyes watching where they walked as if looking for something. Soon, however, he raised his head a bit and sniffed the air.
"I smell fish."
Tantin's fur went a few shades into yellow and his face formed the Kushiban equivalent of a smile. He looked up to Nala.
"I've never been very into games. My parents always said I should study. The other children thought I was...weird."
Tantin's smile fell short a few moments after he finished talking, his thoughts going to his life on Kushibah, in his home village.

As they neared the common dining hall Tantin's ears twitched as he straightened up and peered about from Nala's arms. She smiled.
"I am not surprised. But tell me, do you prefer to catch your own, or eat what has already been prepared?"
The habits of Kushiban were unknown to her and she hoped the young alien wouldn't take offense. Tchunn's tip twitched against the fur of Tantin's neck as Nala classified 'yellow' with 'hungry' in terms of his mood-fur.
Noting his sudden silence, the Twi'Lek shrugged.
"Don't let the opinions of others bother you. What matters is that you are content and at peace, here," with her right hand she gently tapped his chest, "I learned to dance."

Arvis walked down the corridors of the academy's residential wing, leading the new arrival Jade(not to be confused with Master Ael Jade) to her new room. There were a few unassigned rooms at present. so Arvis stopped outside one of them and made a few motions on his datapad."Here you are. These will be your quarters, Jade."

*Jade followed Arvis into the residential quarters. When he stopped and told her of her room, she proceeded to enter the door, but only just. She looked inside and couldn't help but be amazed at it. Even the nice hotels she stayed at while living on Contruum didn't compare to the size and style of the quarters. And what was more, they would be hers. She wouldn't be expected to leave or pay. She could, at last, have a home once more, a place she could always return to. Even with mere minutes she had been here, she already felt warm and welcome. It reminded her of being with her family. She couldn't help but let a faint, gentle smile take form.*
"This room is very nice, very welcoming." *She turned back to Arvis.* "I don't think I've felt more awake. I'd like to get set up with needs to be done and there is no time like the present. What is required in the testing?"
